Using Corner Spaces To Decorate

If you are looking for a small decorating project and do not want to spend a ton of money, take a look at the corners of your room. Since most of us can not afford to change up rugs, furniture, and artwork often, myself included, making a small space pretty is inexpensive and fun.

I have this corner in the kitchen I have been wanting to do something with. The wallpaper looks good, love the artwork, but something was missing:

I could not really think of any ideas because it is a darker area in the room and there is not a lot of space to decorate. I knew I had to tie in the artwork, so that it will look like a ‘collection’ together. I found this old stool in the basement- love the color and it works well with the artwork. Since it is in the kitchen, I used colorful cookbooks to build a higher base. (Notice how the cookbooks colors work with art. I thought I was a design star for that idea!) :)

Then when I was walking through Home Depot the other day, I spotted a tall low-light houseplant. That will work perfect in my little corner!

Looking good so far. I use the light switch often so I did not want to cover it up totally. At times I need to open the door on the right, so I knew I could not make it too heavy so that I could lift the stool and all décor if needed. Plus, I did not want to use anything breakable because there is not much room and it will be easy to knock over. So I tried different items:

Too short, too thin. You just have to keep looking around for that perfect piece. I found a vase from a favorite vacation trip to Mexico on a shelf in the basement. I love using items from my past! Looks tall enough and I love that it brings texture in the arrangement:

A trick I use often when using faux flower stems, is to push a piece of paper or two inside of the vase to build height and it also helps keep the stems stationary.

And done! Not too busy, very colorful and fills corner nicely.

From a dark corner of the kitchen, to a pretty little spot- it’s all in the details! A couple years ago I wrote a post on decorating a bedroom corner which you can read here.

Hope you enjoyed!

Have a great week everyone!
