How Much Would You Pay for the Perfect Accessory?

October 6, 2018

If you found the perfect accessory for your home, could not find anything better because it was so perfect for what you needed, would you pay anything for it?  I thought I was in the ‘Absolutely’ group until I found an item I really want to buy is above my ‘reasonable’ price range and I can not justify the purchase.

This is my story: I found THE perfect window treatments for the windows in my spare room project here.

I keep looking at them:

Perigold

Aren’t they so beautiful? So me.  They are perfect. Perfect color, perfect print, perfect everything. The problem is that they are  $793.00 per panel! Yes, you read that right. That is only for one. Is that unbelievable? No wonder I do not shop Perigold often, only when I have a high end client where money isn’t an issue. That client is not me unfortunately. I love them but I have to be reasonable. (But I want them!) So now that I found exactly what I want, I thought I would look around online to find similar, ( but not as expensive!):

I looked on Etsy and found these which are nice and colorful:

The price for a pair of these are £318.82, which I had to look up in American dollars and the total would be $415.06 in today’s exchange rate. That is for a pair. They are a good width at 50”. Since I am using them only as decoration, there are blinds already installed, 50” is a good width to lightly bunch and hang on each side of the window for color and softness.

I found these window treatments at Overstock:

I was considering this set, but they remind me of Spring too much. And I don’t like the peach in them at all. The price for two pairs, to hang two panels per side for fullness, is a total of $78.20.  It figures the ones I like least are the least expensive.

I do love these from Birch Lane:

You know I love navy blue and navy would work well in the room. This weekend they are only $58.00 for the pair with free shipping.  Excellent price with great reviews. Decisions, decisions…..

If you were not aware, a lot of accessories and home décor at most stores are having big sales for the Columbus Day weekend!

I looked at Pottery Barn for my windows-  Good place to search if looking for solids- not patterns.

Wayfair has a large selection as does Joss and Main, but did not find anything I was looking for.

Pier One had nothing of interest.

Macy’s has a lot of different choices, but none that came near the original I was looking for.

Bed, Bath & Beyond also has a large selection, but nothing near my original Perigold look.

Do you drive yourself crazy like this when shopping online for yourself? I usually start searching at the bottom price items and work my way up to the most expensive. Oh, why did I have to see those first window panels from Perigold? haha Unfortunately, they have to be taken off the list. The Overstock pair is also off the list, just not crazy about them. I did order a sample of the Etsy curtains and I will see if they work well with the carpet. I will keep you updated.

Are you looking for new window treatments? I try to use panels in a room if possible for color and to soften the hardness of the walls and window. I hope I have given you a few online places to search. Remember this weekend is a good time to buy because of all the sales going on.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Color Crush: Benjamin Moore Horizon

September 29, 2018

I have been stressing out all week trying to decide on paint colors for our new home. Painter is on his way and I have not selected a single color! Sound familiar? It is always more difficult to select colors when it is your own place! First up to be painted is a guest room:

We decided to keep the carpet for the time being.  I thought about buying new bed linens but the flooring is so bossy it really limited my options. I actually found a lovely white comforter I have and can use. So where else to start looking for color inspiration? Art is another good place to start and I have so much artwork from the other house, why not try to use what I already have? I love this piece and it works really well with the carpet:

At first I thought I would bring in navy for window treatments, lamps, etc., but doesn’t the turquoise also look great?:Read More

Mixing Stained Trim/Doors With White

September 22, 2018

There are no pretty pictures this week my lovelies! Just a little lesson on one of the most common questions I receive from readers and that is  asking about mixing stained trim and doors with painted white trim and doors. I wrote a blog on this subject here a few years ago. Many homeowner’s wish to update their stained trim to white but they find it so overwhelming because there is so much of it throughout the home.

One solution I wrote about here, is to paint the walls, trim and doors all one color:

Another idea I think works well for an updated look is to leave the doors stained, (which is expensive to change), and paint the trim around the door white:Read More

Do I Really Need a Dining Room?

September 15, 2018

Are dining rooms really necessary today? If you have a large family and love to have big dinner parties, I would say yes. But for us, Holidays are the only time we use the dining room.  We are always in the kitchen. The reason I am questioning this now is because of our new home. Here is how the previous owners had the room set up:

But, I am thinking what a waste the room will be if it is only used once or twice a year.  Here is the room now, (remember we only moved a week ago haha):

The fireplace is in the middle of room, so if we kept as a dining room, the table would have to go in the middle of room to make the space look cohesive. Here are a few dining rooms that have a fireplace:Read More

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

September 8, 2018

My husband Mike and I moved this week from NH back to RI. After moving last December, (from RI to NH), we said that we would NEVER go through moving again. Never say never. OMG, it is so much work! I am living out of boxes right now and I don’t know if we will ever finish. That’s how I feel right now. I thought I would share some of the good, bad and ugly with you for a fun read.

The Good:

Our new house is very pretty:

The landscaping is beautiful:

And my favorite feature of the new home:

We have always wanted a built-in pool. Having a cabana is even better!

The previous owners just remodeled the master bath. Not exactly my taste, but I do like our new fancy tub:

Can you believe it costs over $8,000.00?! I have not used it yet, but I am hoping the experience is out of this world for that price.

The Bad:

The new home is much older than our house in NH. Mike and I are calling the previous owner a hacker because everything is done half ass. Plumbing, electrical, painting, etc. etc. Good thing Mike can fix anything- because everything needs  fixed.

The new $8,000.00 tub I told you about, it’s leaking .  Drip, drip, drip. Mike had to order a special, (expensive) part to see if it can be fixed.

I understand we bought a home with previous owners, but I hate having to clean everything, (even after professional cleaners came in). So much work. Nasty and gross.

The Ugly:

Here is an example of ugly:

This example is a great painting lesson. Never start painting and change the color in the middle of wall. Never. Ever. Do you think they put the swoop in because they thought it would blend in better? haha

One of the ugly spare baths:

BUT, the ugly can be turned into the pretty! A lot of work ahead of us, but think of all the fun I will have painting and decorating all the rooms! Has anyone else had the pleasure of moving into a new home lately? I will keep you updated on our progress. For now, I better get back to opening boxes and moving furniture:

Have a great weekend everyone!
