Martha’s Vineyard Stonington Gray Exterior Project
What color do you think of when you picture a home exterior on Martha's Vineyard? I think of light and airy beach colors. And that is just what the customer ordered- “I want gray and white beachy!”.The first paint color that came to my mind was Benjamin Moore’s Stonington Gray HC-170:A modern and fresh medium toned gray with a slight blue undertone. I have suggested this paint color many times on exterior consultations. The client sampled on a large poster board and loved it.Here is a before photo of her home:My friend thought she would like the whole exterior, including the bottom lattice, painted in the same paint color. But after priming the lattice:She decided to paint the bottom a darker color. We looked at a few different options but after sampling, she decided on Ben Moore Amherst Gray HC- 167.Ben Moore’s Simply White OC-117 was selected for the trim, columns, railing and garage door. Pebble Beach was used for the porch ceiling. After photo:A huge difference in the before and after photos. Doesn’t it look so much more ‘beachy’ than the dark blue? For the exterior doors:I suggested one of my favorite black door colors- Ben Moore Wrought Iron 2124-10, ( which I wrote all about here), in a semi gloss finish: Much, much better!

If you are looking for a modern, bright and fresh gray that’s a little on the cooler side, take a look at Stonington Gray. Be sure to sample all colors before you paint!PS. Have you heard of the company Samplize.com? They sell 12 x 12” peel-and-stick paint samples made with real paint. They carry Benjamin Moore samples, Sherwin Williams and Farrow & Ball. They are repositionable so they can be moved around a few times. They used to carry 24 x 24” samples but they are no longer available. That size was perfect. The 12 x 12” is a pretty good size to work with, certainly better than the little paint chip size. The price is $5.95 each, which isn’t too bad considering the cost of buying a small sample can and poster board, and of course a time saver for you. When you visit their site the first time, you get a $5.00 coupon off your first order.
Have a great weekend everyone!
