Wood Foundation Construction: 3 Tips for DIY Projects
Hey everyone! The weather is starting to get nicer outside, and we are waiting and welcoming the longer, warmer days ahead! Now is the time to get your outdoor space in order. So today, I am welcoming a guest blogger, my friend Ashley, who shares a few quick tips for building outdoor projects. Putting together an actual plan is the only way to get a project done. Especially if you are going to be building a shed, gazebo or an outdoor studio for instance. I spoke with Ashley after I read an article about 5 Types of Foundation for Garages, Carports, and Sheds here. I learned a lot and I loved the animation graphics!
Whether a charming garden shed or enchanting tree house for kids, every structure needs a strong foundation. As the base and load-bearer, a good foundation supports the structural integrity (protecting it from costly repairs down the line!).
One of the easiest types of foundation to use for DIY projects is wood, which innately blends with backyard and outdoor aesthetic. Best of all, wood is a natural insulator, which can help keep the space nice and cozy. Wood foundations do, however, require a bit of maintenance.
So, if you’re planning to build a lovely addition to your backyard retreat, here are three quick tips to keep in mind!
1. Choose a Resistant Wood Type
Most types of wood are prone to mold and insects, especially in areas where it’s humid. When choosing wood for your foundation, opt for redwood, cypress, and cedar. These three wood types (although a bit more expensive than the others) are naturally resistant to bugs and mold.
2. Make Sure It is Pressure-Treated Wood
Pressure-treated lumber has preservative agents that keep it durable and in good condition. Without it, the wood can decay from rough weather damage and termites, which can collapse the foundation!
3. Use Proper Fastening Tools
Last but not least, you’ll need good fastening tools to ensure the structure is properly secured to the foundation. In addition to nails, post base brackets and screws can provide extra stability.
And there you have it, three quick tips when constructing wood foundations. We hope these were helpful!
