Do You Need a Portico?

What is a portico you ask? A portico is a porch leading to the entrance of a building, or extended as a colonnade, with a roof structure over a walkway, supported by columns or enclosed by walls. This idea was widely used in ancient Greece and has influenced many cultures, including most Western cultures:

Why would YOU want a portico? Front porticos are a very popular addition to homes where owners want an affordable way to protect their front entry and guests from the weather. A portico is the ideal solution for homes that have a limited lot size or are not designed to naturally add a front porch. All these benefits add up to increased curb appeal and ultimately a higher value when it comes time to sell your home. And most importantly, a portico styles up the front of your home considerably and makes it more welcoming to you and guests!

Visuals are best- here are a couple examples of how homes can transform their look with an addition of a portico:

It really beautifies the front of your home!

Below, here is a before photo from a homeowner who wanted help with her exterior colors:

Very cute home that needed just a little something extra. We selected Ben Moore Stonington Gray for all the brick and siding, (using the same color for top and bottom to make home seem taller with no ‘split’ down the middle). I also suggested a portico:

I love the new look! The client is very happy too. Yay!

I especially think porticos can transform the front entry when you have a ranch home plan:

Adding to or updating your home’s entrance can make a huge impact on the aesthetic appeal of your home’s facade. In addition, a portico or front porch also serve the practical purpose of keeping you dry on rainy days and, depending on the structure, providing a great place to hang out and enjoy your front yard.

There are many styles to choose from. A few of my favorites are the traditional gabled portico:

Arched roof porticos are simply beautiful:

When budgets are tight and stoops are restricted, a bracket portico can be a smart option. Although they are missing columns, bracket porticos provide ample curb appeal by helping to amplify the front entry and provides shelter for incoming visitors from inclement weather:

So if you need a little more architectural interest in the front of your home, maybe a portico will work for you!

Thanks everyone! Have a lovely summer weekend!
