How Much Would You Pay for the Perfect Accessory?

October 6, 2018

If you found the perfect accessory for your home, could not find anything better because it was so perfect for what you needed, would you pay anything for it?  I thought I was in the ‘Absolutely’ group until I found an item I really want to buy is above my ‘reasonable’ price range and I can not justify the purchase.

This is my story: I found THE perfect window treatments for the windows in my spare room project here.

I keep looking at them:

perigold

Perigold

Aren’t they so beautiful? So me.  They are perfect. Perfect color, perfect print, perfect everything. The problem is that they are  $793.00 per panel! Yes, you read that right. That is only for one. Is that unbelievable? No wonder I do not shop Perigold often, only when I have a high end client where money isn’t an issue. That client is not me unfortunately. I love them but I have to be reasonable. (But I want them!) So now that I found exactly what I want, I thought I would look around online to find similar, ( but not as expensive!):

I looked on Etsy and found these which are nice and colorful:

The price for a pair of these are £318.82, which I had to look up in American dollars and the total would be $415.06 in today’s exchange rate. That is for a pair. They are a good width at 50”. Since I am using them only as decoration, there are blinds already installed, 50” is a good width to lightly bunch and hang on each side of the window for color and softness.

I found these window treatments at Overstock:

I was considering this set, but they remind me of Spring too much. And I don’t like the peach in them at all. The price for two pairs, to hang two panels per side for fullness, is a total of $78.20.  It figures the ones I like least are the least expensive.

I do love these from Birch Lane:

You know I love navy blue and navy would work well in the room. This weekend they are only $58.00 for the pair with free shipping.  Excellent price with great reviews. Decisions, decisions…..

If you were not aware, a lot of accessories and home décor at most stores are having big sales for the Columbus Day weekend!

I looked at Pottery Barn for my windows-  Good place to search if looking for solids- not patterns.

Wayfair has a large selection as does Joss and Main, but did not find anything I was looking for.

Pier One had nothing of interest.

Macy’s has a lot of different choices, but none that came near the original I was looking for.

Bed, Bath & Beyond also has a large selection, but nothing near my original Perigold look.

Do you drive yourself crazy like this when shopping online for yourself? I usually start searching at the bottom price items and work my way up to the most expensive. Oh, why did I have to see those first window panels from Perigold? haha Unfortunately, they have to be taken off the list. The Overstock pair is also off the list, just not crazy about them. I did order a sample of the Etsy curtains and I will see if they work well with the carpet. I will keep you updated.

Are you looking for new window treatments? I try to use panels in a room if possible for color and to soften the hardness of the walls and window. I hope I have given you a few online places to search. Remember this weekend is a good time to buy because of all the sales going on.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Sneak Peek of My New Home Office

May 5, 2018

I can finally start getting excited about our home office project. I am starting to see the finish line! My husband and I have been working, (on and off), upstairs on a brand new office for me!:

office

I am fortunate my husband is such a great handyman- he can make anything. After painting, ( with my favorite color) navy blue, we had to wire in new lights because there was not any overhead lighting. And we decided to build a whole wall of bookshelves and cabinets:

Five Common Bedroom Decorating Mistakes and How to Fix Them

March 10, 2018

Do you feel as if your bedroom is off somehow but not quite sure what the problem is? Here are five common decorating mistakes and ideas on how you can fix them.

Lighting

The feeling that your bedroom is too bright or too dark is a shared problem for a lot of people.  The main problem is that there are many bedrooms with only overhead lighting in the room. They are often blinding and not very functional. Overhead lights does not even give you the correct light to let you read a book.

Instead, try layer lighting throughout the room. In a bedroom, just as in any other space, you need ambient (general, ceiling-mounted) lighting to illuminate the entire room; task lighting (on bedside tables and vanities) to provide focused light for reading and other activities; and accent lighting, (in the form of wall sconces for example) to add drama, wash the room in soft illumination and lend a cozy, welcoming vibe. Lights at different levels and in different areas create a mood that’s warm and inviting.   Dimmers allow you to adjust wattage depending on the time of day and the mood you want.

It is a good idea to stay in the same color palette, just be sure to mix in different patterns and prints for a more interesting and attractive look:

Too Small Window Treatments

I know that you hear this often, but it is a very important detail. Your curtains need to touch the floor. That means the pole should hang between top of window frame and ceiling. If ready made curtains are too short for this height, then buy the longer set and have them hemmed. I also see the ‘skimpy’ width panels that look, well, look skimpy! An easy rule of thumb to remember is that your width of your curtains should be the double width of the window. For example, if your window frame width across is 50”, then 100” is what your curtain width should be. For ready made curtains, I usually find ordering two sets and sewing two panels together works perfectly. Also, extend your poles as far out as possible which will allow you to open fully.

Wrong Size Artwork Over Bed

This is a common decorating mistake that can easily be fixed.  My grievance is the issue of artwork being too small over the bed that makes it looks as if it is floating in space. Too small of a piece of artwork looks lost and sad.

How to figure out the right size that will look perfect over your bed? The best starting point is to keep your finished piece, (the edges of the canvas or frame) between 60-80% the width of the headboard. I prefer the 80% because it looks most pleasing. For example, for a standard 76 inch wide king bed you should consider art that is between 40”×50”  or 48”×60” for a little larger size.

Or if you want to hang a pair of images or a gallery wall, treat the whole thing as one piece that’s between 45 and 60 inches wide. This is just a starting point for you to try. Experiment with taping paper above your bed until you get the look you love!

Room Looks Off Balance

For a bedroom to look cohesive and organized, I am a true believer in symmetry. Matching nightstands and matching lamps on each side of the bed visually balances the room.

Reminder Tip When Using Ready Made Curtains

February 3, 2018

I sometime wish I could afford to have all of my window treatments in the house be custom made. Wouldn’t that be nice to have someone to come into your home , give you great ideas on what would be the best look for your windows, measure and then come back and install these gorgeous, perfect window treatments? Who wouldn’t? Yes, there are custom window treatment specialist to hire, but the price is usually so high.  Right? I have had custom treatments done in my home but not often because of the cost.

So if you are like me, I buy ready made curtains. One tip I wanted to remind you of is when purchasing a pair of panels, always buy TWO sets, (two panels for each side of window). Yes it is more expensive, but the look is so much more pleasing, almost as if they were custom made.

Here is an example I am working on now. I did not follow my own advice and only purchased one set of two for my office window. Thought I could get away with only one panel on each side:

office win

They look ok,  but not really special. Kind of chintzy is what I thought:

office wind

They just bothered me because I knew I could easily fix the problem. So I bought another set of two panels and tried them out:

Much nicer and fuller.

So much better, don’t you think? I might like to get a longer rod, or extension piece in the middle of the rod:

So I can extend the curtains more out toward the wall:

Master Bedroom ReDesign 101- It’s Time for You!

January 6, 2018

Have you updated your master bedroom within the last few years? Does your room always get pushed aside for other projects? Well, let’s make 2018 the year for you to refresh your bedroom retreat:

marsha-guest-room new

Maybe you only need a quick mini-facelift with updated accessories. January is home décor sale month so now is the time to purchase new items.

But if you are looking for advice for a complete bedroom do over, this post is for you!

Step One: The Bed.

The bed is the focal point/star of the room. You must make it a statement piece to get that ‘wow’ look for the room. How?

Headboard: Do you love your existing headboard? Are you ready for a change? Have you considered using a headboard only, no side rails or footboard? This is a great choice if your space is at a minimum. I have been suggesting upholstered headboards for bedrooms because they give you the best (modern, classic) look at many different price ranges:

Look at the customer reviews to help narrow your search. Another reason I like using an upholstered headboard is that the fabric helps soften all the hard edges in the room, (walls, dressers, etc.) The color I suggest purchasing is an off white or ivory. Both will work well with both white bedding or beige bedding:

I try to steer away from beige headboards because beige has undertones, strong red or yellow, and may be difficult to find bedding to work well. Look how this headboard is ‘sticking out’ and clashing with the bedding:Read More
