Favorite Color Combo: Red Brick & Gray

February 16, 2019

Hey everyone! Over the years working with brick exteriors, I have found my favorite color combination with red brick is dark gray:

Don’t you agree the gray together with the brick looks beautiful?

Grays are tricky because of their undertones. The undertones of a color really stand out in the sunlight. The lighter grays have blue undertones, such as Boothbay Gray HC-165 and Stonington Gray HC-170. Here is a example photo:Read More

Double Post! Readers’ Questions Answered PLUS Stunning Before & After Exterior Photos

January 5, 2019

I have not written a post in awhile, so I thought I would start the New Year off with an double dose of decorating fun! Here are a few questions I have received recently from readers:

Hi Kelly,

“This is what I am working with. I recently purchased a home that has emerald/forest green kitchen and bath counter tops the cabinets were a medium brown and had gold hardware. Since replacing the counter tops is not an option and I am working with them. I have chosen a grey almost slightly shaded brown for my cabinet color and have purchases a light grey for my walls which flows into my dining and den area where I have a large wall that has a rock fireplace with built inns. My problem is in the den there is chair rail molding not the pretty kind and taking it up is not on my want to do list should I paint the chair rail the same color as the wall to make the room flow or should I make them pop. I will be painting kitchen and hopefully funding some type of backsplash I am considering just going with hunter green subway tile and just going with it lol. “Also should I paint the built ins the same color as the walls or a contrasting color like the color of my kitchen cabinets also I want to brighten up the stone fireplace but not to much and am unsure if I should keep the fireplace mantel the original wood because I am adding a custom variated wood island in the kitchen area. I trying my best to blend it all together without it looking to log cabin style lol going for more farmhouse.”

My advice for her back splash working with the emerald green counters, is NOT to buy a solid green subway tile. I think it will be too much green! Here are a couple ideas I would consider to work with the green counter tops for a back splash:

A neutral back splash or a tile with a bit of hunter green in it would work best. Choose the one that will work best with counters and cabinets. I think your kitchen will look great after painting and adding a new back splash!Read More

Color Crush: Van Deusen Blue

September 1, 2018

Definitely one of my favorite blues. This grayish blue paint color is from the Benjamin Moore Historical Collection and has been a preferred blue for many homeowners over the years.

I love seeing it used in a semi-gloss finish on cabinets:

This color is a very popular color choice for cabinets in both kitchen and baths: (Do you see the difference in the color with different lighting? That is why it is so important for you to sample paint colors in your home with your lighting.)

Blue & Beige Bedroom Consultation

January 28, 2016

I have been working online with a woman from Chicago on her bedroom redesign. She found me on Pinterest on my design boards here.  Her design plan is coming out so nice I just wanted to share. Her bedroom was already painted in Revere Pewter and she just needed a little help finding bedding, window treatments and a few accessories that would work well together with the Revere.

I am having the best time working with my new client, Shaunie. She wrote and asked for help with her entryway that she is trying to update and make beautiful:

She grew up near the ocean and loves the colors gray, white, green and blue. You can see that she incorporated these colors with her beautiful dolphin over her front door:

The color she had recently painted was perfect for the room. She had asked me about painting advice for her staircase:

She wanted to paint it black and was just looking for confirmation that it was a good idea:

I think it was a great idea! It looks beautiful so far!

Although we are not quite finished, here is a peek at her design board we put together so far:

Shaunie has been so enthusiastic throughout the project and it’s making the entire experience fun and I am having a great time helping her!

Would you like to see an after photo when she is through putting in all of the finishing touches? She is working so quickly and excitedly, she will be finished in no time! Right, Shaunie?
