Revere Pewter With Oak Cabinets?

April 16, 2015

A reader recently wrote asking if I thought Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter paint color works well with oak cabinets. Here is a nice example I found on Houzz:

I think it works very well in the room above which has the oak cabinets. Since I could not find other photos online, I took my large color sample to see how it looked with the lighter stained wood:

I think Revere Pewter and the light wood work well together. The green undertone in the paint and the yellow undertone in the wood are playing very nice together. I also like the combination of Revere Pewter with the darker stained wood:

One reason I have always loved Revere Pewter is because it is such a versatile and adaptable color. If you have noticed, a room that has been painted in Revere Pewter and the room has a lot of sunlight, the walls will read more gray. In lower lit rooms, the  Revere Pewter walls take on more of a beige color:

And another big reason that I love Revere Pewter is because it works with most all other colors. Such a perfect color! So yes, Diane, I think Revere Pewter works well with oak cabinets. But be sure to sample in your lighting! Such an important step because the paint color will look different in the day and the night lighting and you want to be sure you love both!

Benjamin Moore Announces 2015 Color of the Year

October 18, 2014

[pinterest]It is that time of year again. The paint companies begin to unveil their newly selected color of the year. This week, Benjamin Moore announced Guilford Green HC-116 as the color of the year for 2015:

Guilford Green is being called a neutral color that is a natural. A silvery green that works a wide range of color combinations – from neutrals to daring shades.

It looks like a color that works well with lighter wood. Maybe try a sample with oak cabinets?

The Color Trends 2015 collection features four color families – green, blue, blush and berry. The bold, more saturated hues represent an evolution from the soft pastels that comprised the brand’s Color Trends 2014.

“We chose Guilford Green as our 2015 Color of the Year because it can be the hero or the highlight in any room, enhancing the architectural identity of a space,” said Ellen O’Neill, Creative Director at Benjamin Moore. “Guilford Green is the perfect thread to connect nature, spaces and interiors with color schemes that signify fresh energy and growth.”

The 23 colors of the Color Trends 2015 palette are highlighted below:

I think the Guilford Green works well with most of the colors. I have to point out to you that the Guilford Green samples you see on the computer screen is nothing like it looks in real life.

What do you think of the new color of the year? Do you think it will be as popular as last year’s ‘Breath of Fresh Air’? Which color family is your favorite?

Best Wall Color For Oak Cabinets

June 10, 2012

One question I seem to be asked frequently from readers is “What color works best in a kitchen that has oak cabinets? I cannot/do not want to change my cabinets at this time.” Which color would you suggest?”

All woods have undertones. Oak has yellow undertones that we need to be aware of. If you want your cabinets to ‘pop’ off the wall, then I would suggest a  blue or violet color which is the complimentary (across the color wheel) color of yellow. But most people do not want their cabinets as the main focus of the kitchen.

I also feel blue in a kitchen gives you more of a country look:

As I posted in my blog Best Wall Colors for Stained Trim , I typically do not like to suggest using a white paint with lighter wood cabinets for a few reasons. One-white has different undertones that do not always work with the yellow wood. Secondly, I personally do not like the look with no contrast since it looks a little too pale for me.

Yellow seem to be the color of choice for many people that have lighter wood cabinets. Yellow might work but my but only concern with yellow is that this color doesn’t really create any personality in the room. Without any contrast, the room tends to look a bit too boring for my taste.

So, what is my suggestion for a wall color when you have oak/light cabinets?

So green is my first choice when looking for a great color to work with oak or light wood cabinets. My color advice is based on working with oak cabinets. The floors or countertops were not taken into consideration for this example.

Do you agree  green is the best color for kitchens with oak cabinets? I also like a few terra cotta colors but that is for another day! Comments?
