Steps When Planning a Kitchen Renovation 101

July 28, 2018

This summer I have been working with a local couple on their complete vacation home makeover. They decided to start with the kitchen and wanted me to discuss the right steps to follow when planning a complete redo of their kitchen. My first suggestion to them was to find a contractor to work with. That is not easy I know! The contractor will be able to hire the sub-contractors needed for demolition, electrical work, plumbing, permits, etc. Meanwhile, you will have to chose the components that are going into the new space and if you want to avoid stress later, these steps will help guide you in the overall process.

They are redesigning the kitchen area top to bottom. Here is a before photo:

Step One for the Kitchen:

As I tell all of my clients, their first big decision should be the countertop. (the most expensive item in the room and least amount of selections.) Right now both quartz and granite are still the most popular choices. My biggest tip when buying a new countertop is to GO to where the stone is whole. You can look at the little samples and online to get an idea of what you like, but you must go to stone yard to choose your large piece for counters to see exactly which piece you are getting because every piece is unique:

Fabric Tip Worth Repeating

July 14, 2015

I probably sound like a broken record on the subject, but what happened today proves my point perfectly why you should be ordering fabric samples before purchasing.

inman sultana

I have been looking quite a while for the perfect fabric for my kitchen windows and after looking at different colors and patterns, I decided a fabric with a white background with navy design would be perfect.

The two fabric samples above are pictures of the same fabric. The background looks plainly white, don’t you agree? This is the sample I received today in mail:

Even through the computer, you can see how OFF white it is. And the navy is plush and thick. Not what I was expecting. Here is another example:

Notice the white background. And here is the actual sample of fabric:

Can you see how OFF white the actual fabric is?

Imagine if I did not worry about getting a sample and ordered 14 yards of it for window treatments? What if it were for a client? You can not return it!

One more example to drive this info into your brain:

I love, love using fabric and do not want to discourage anyone from ordering fabric online. Just be sure to order that sample to save yourself from any headaches! Thanks everyone!

The BEST Kitchen Wall Color For Oak Cabinets

June 8, 2015

I wrote about it here, what I know to be the best wall color in a kitchen with oak cabinets/flooring:

It has been such a popular post, which means many are still looking for that perfect kitchen wall color.

Well, now you can stop searching!

The paint color that works best with the oak is a green with yellow undertones:

Since writing that post in 2012, I have helped many select colors for their kitchens with existing oak cabinets. My conclusion is the same:

A green with yellow undertones such as SW 6415 Hearts of Palm:

Benjamin Moore Agave AF-420:

Benjamin Moore Georgian Green: HC-115

The proof is in the photos! A pretty sage green will look amazing with your oak cabinets! Trust me!

Beautiful Kitchen Transformation

January 1, 2015

Happy New Year everyone! I wish you all a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2015!

I wanted to share with you an online kitchen redesign I have been working on. I have been working with Jeff for a few months. He sent me photos and asked for ideas to update and refresh his kitchen without taking out the existing oak cabinets.

Since his oak cabinets are so bossy, we had to address them first and find the right paint color. I gave Jeff a few wall color options that would work well and he decided on Benjamin Moore Agave AF-420. This paint color works beautifully with oak cabinets:

I love how Agave looks with the white trim also:

After we selected the paint color, I helped him choose his new countertops and backsplash:

I love the artwork he choose for the room and it gave us our beautiful green and blue color palette:

I sent him ideas with photos and links to products I knew would work well. He would choose the items he liked best that fit his budget and style.

We picked out lighting, rugs and window treatments and other accessories. Here is the design board I put together for him:

He loves it! I think it came out beautifully. So happy. We are still working on little details which I will share another day.

Happy New Year My Friends!
