Home Office Bookshelves Complete & How to Find Stuff for Styling Bookshelves

June 30, 2018

The original plans were that our new office would be finished by the end of May. What is the date today? July 1. Has this ever happened to you? Of course it has.

But it  is coming out beautifully. My husband Mike has put a lot of time and work into designing and building these shelves. I thought before the final show of the room, I would give you a few ideas on how to find items to display to make your bookshelves beautiful!:

new shelvesBefore I can even start to decorate; BIG TIP: When you hire electricians for a job, make sure you tell them exactly where the plugs will be. I assumed, wrong, that they would put the plugs close to bottom of shelf or anywhere else besides where they put them in the middle of the wall. Duh. So before I do anything, I have to cover the plugs:

Better. My first place to look for items to style the shelves is shopping my own home. In closets, basement and cupboards. I have tons of stuff from over the years! I knew that the very top shelf of the bookcase would look best with one simple accessory that one, looks good and two, takes up room. That can be a tray or I like to use a basket:Read More

Did You Know??

June 16, 2018

Thought I would entertain you this weekend with a few fun decorating facts that you will enjoy!

Did you know??

*   For all of the paint choices available, 80% of the time we use only 20% of all colors?

*   One pair of pillows on a sofa always looks skimpy. Better to use two pairs, in contrasting colors, patterns and textures to bring your sofa to the next level.

*   You can easily and inexpensively lighten up any room by bringing in a straw/jute area rug for the warmer weather.

*   Why blue, green and violet are the # 1 bedroom paint color choice? These colors are considered cool and restful and tend to recede and contract. On the other side of the color wheel,  red, yellow and orange are warm and active colors. They tend to advance and expand your walls. Dark colors advance and light colors recede.Read More

Quick Decorating Tip When Displaying Family Photos

May 8, 2018

One idea I always give my clients regarding family photos, is instead of placing a family photo or two around in different areas of your home, it is a great idea to bring every family photo together and lay out in one spot:

One big family gallery wall:

When the photos are all together in a group, people tend to stop and look at the them:

No one seems to stop and look when there is only one or a two photos.  Maybe because it seems you are being nosy looking at their private memories? I think a grouping of photos make people want to stop and look because it is more of a display:

Like beautiful artwork! Just add favorite memories along the way.

Remember this tip when you are looking to display your family in the best possible way!

Amazing Air Plants

May 2, 2018

When I visited the Maine Home & Garden Show in Portland last month, my favorite find was this beautiful air plant:

I had heard of air plants, but wasn’t really sure what they were. I bought it with the sea urchin shell on, (it hides the roots) and thought it was so pretty and unique. Little did I know that it would bloom with flowers:

I was so excited! The best part is that the plant only needs sprayed twice a week.Read More

Simple DIY Pillow Project

April 21, 2018

As you know, a quick and easy update for your home to celebrate the warmer temperatures outside, is to add new, white and bright pillows to your living room and bedroom:

new pillow

I have so many pillows, but I need new ones! haha I found this fabric that I fell in love with right away at Greenhouse Fabrics:

new fabric

I have not sewn in over 15 years but felt I would remember how to sew a simple pillow! I ordered one yard to make 2 18” pillows. I made a 20”, ( 18” plus 1” seam allowance on each side) square pattern out of brown paper and cut out:

Funny how I remembered exactly how to thread the sewing machine, fill a bobbin and figure out the seam allowance! (half inch):

Be sure to leave opening 10-12” on one side to later insert pillow insert. After sewing right sides together, I trimmed the corners and turned inside out. I ironed out any wrinkles and pressed under 1/2” on open edge. After I inserted pillow insert, I sewed up the edge and that was it!:

I forgot how much I enjoyed sewing. I LOVE fabric. I miss not being able to go into a fabric store and be able to touch and feel everything, although there are a lot of places to find beautiful fabrics at great prices, such as  Etsy and Online Fabrics.  I think they came out beautifully! I am happy I did not have to spend a fortune for unique, one of a kind, perfect pillows.  What can I make next? Have you sewed anything in awhile?

I also cleaned out this messy corner:

What projects have you been working on?

Have a great weekend everyone!
