Mat Size Matters

One little decorating trick I love because it is so simple and makes such a big impact:

Is the size of door mats. The standard size front door mat is 30” x 18”. But here are a few examples using a standard size mat:

Such pretty doors but the rugs look too small and disproportioned, don’t you think so? The next rug size up is 2’ x 3” and 3’6″ x 5’6″. Now look how nice the front looks with a larger rug:

Often when I do a Resale-Ready® consultation, one of the first items on my list is suggesting buying a larger and more colorful rug to place at the front door. It makes the entrance to the home warm and welcoming before visitors even walk in the door:

Remember the exterior color consultation I wrote about here?

The front door now looks so pretty! I am helping her choose accessories for the front door area and guess what our first item was to replace? That’s right, the mat size. Here are a couple rugs we found online that would work beautifully:

I always suggest when you are using accessories, indoors or out, big is better! This includes the front door mat. Looking at the below photo, imagine how much nicer the entry would look if you use a larger, colorful outdoor rug:

When you are searching for a larger mat, look at all outdoor rugs, not just entry mats. Look at the sizes offered and then measure your area. Again, think big! It is a simple, dramatic improvement and I promise you will like the look better!

    • LOL Cassandra! Don’t the mats look so small? I could have shown many pictures of the small rug in front of these beautiful doors. It was finding pictures that had it right, those pictures I could not find!

  1. Oh Kelly this is SUCH a great idea! The images you show of little/ordinary sized mats look like the proverbial ‘postage size framed print on an interior wall’. Haha! We hopefully will be redoing our front step yet this season. This is a terrific thing to keep in mind especially now with larger indoor/outdoor rugs on sale. Great tip!
