Master Bedroom ReDesign 101- It’s Time for You!

January 6, 2018

Have you updated your master bedroom within the last few years? Does your room always get pushed aside for other projects? Well, let’s make 2018 the year for you to refresh your bedroom retreat:

Maybe you only need a quick mini-facelift with updated accessories. January is home décor sale month so now is the time to purchase new items.

But if you are looking for advice for a complete bedroom do over, this post is for you!

Step One: The Bed.

The bed is the focal point/star of the room. You must make it a statement piece to get that ‘wow’ look for the room. How?

Headboard: Do you love your existing headboard? Are you ready for a change? Have you considered using a headboard only, no side rails or footboard? This is a great choice if your space is at a minimum. I have been suggesting upholstered headboards for bedrooms because they give you the best (modern, classic) look at many different price ranges:

Look at the customer reviews to help narrow your search. Another reason I like using an upholstered headboard is that the fabric helps soften all the hard edges in the room, (walls, dressers, etc.) The color I suggest purchasing is an off white or ivory. Both will work well with both white bedding or beige bedding:

I try to steer away from beige headboards because beige has undertones, strong red or yellow, and may be difficult to find bedding to work well. Look how this headboard is ‘sticking out’ and clashing with the bedding:

Not a good look. I like the ivory or off white fabric so the headboard does not dictate the colors of the room. Do you see what undertones are showing in the headboard above? The answer is below at end of post.

Your Dresser

The next largest piece in the room. Do you have functioning but maybe not a beautiful dresser? Why not give painting a try? Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is one option and fantastic to work with! Marsha was very proud of herself after painting her older dresser here:

It was the first time she tried painting furniture. She said that she really enjoyed and was a lot of fun! It came out beautifully, don’t you agree?

NIGHT STANDS:

I myself prefer matching night stands. Boring maybe, but I love the look of symmetry in a bedroom because it helps with balance and has a calming effect which is perfect for a master bedroom suite.

Tip: If you have an upholstered headboard, you have many options open to choose for the material of your nightstands. Wood, metal or mirror all look great with the fabric:

The prices today are very reasonable for bedroom nightstands.

A round table works well when space is at a minimum.

BEDSIDE LAMPS:

I also suggest buying a matching set of lamps, one for each side of the bed. Symmetry= Balance=Peaceful and Calm.

Purchasing a new comforter and/or bed linens will lift your room’s spirit!

PAINT

Now while we are waiting for our new purchases to be delivered, let’s select our wall color. To help narrow your color choices, read here to find which ‘look’ you dream about in your bedroom. After you decide light or moody, take your sham or pillow to a Ben Moore or Sherwin Williams paint store where they will help you find a couple great choices that you can bring home and sample. It is more expensive going to a specialty retail center, but it is a big plus actually going to a paint store where the owner and associates are trained in color and color trends. They will help you save a lot of time and money.

WINDOWS

To get that finished look in a room, I usually suggest long window panels in a beautiful fabric for window treatments. The rule is if your bedding has a busy fabric, then your window panels should be in a solid color. If a simple print or a solid color is on the bed, then colorful, patterned window panels are a great way to bring in color to the room:

MIRRORS

Every bedroom needs at least one mirror. Over your dresser, do you still have the old, original wood mirror hanging? If you do not update anything else, this is a huge improvement in the room. Yes, it matches, but it looks out of date. Changing your dresser mirror is another easy way to update your bedroom by purchasing a beautiful, new mirror to replace the old. Round mirrors are very popular right now and look great in every room.

And those are the basics for redesigning your bedroom. I hope I have helped give you a few ideas and inspiration to making your master bedroom the retreat you were looking for.(Explain to your other half that January is sales month and you will save a lot of money.) Do it for you!

Did you guess what undertones are showing in the headboard above? The answer is yellow.

Have a great weekend everyone!

  1. Hi Kelly,
My master bedroom has a large arched window. currently we have a black out shade that covers the whole window – it’s effective but ugly! I want to cover the whole window with a curtain. I’ve been looking at curved curtain rods to hang a curtain from the top of the window. Do you have experience with these types of rods and suggestions on which ones are the best? Thanks.

  2. I love those “Mad Men” headboards too, but they seem like they’d be dust-catchers (and dust-mite catchers) here in the city where the dust-bunnies are rampant.

  3. Hi Kelly, great information! I currently have darker walls (BM Algonquin Trails) with stained wood slay bed and stain wood closet doors and trim including baseboards. My comforter is a solid Red-Orange. The only light in our bedroom is the cream carpeting, alabaster mini/blinds, cream lamp shades and light sheets. My husband loves it but I would like to lighten it up a bit. Any suggestions?

    • Hi Teena! A couple ideas to lighten your room- how about a wide throw on end of bed in cream or even a light blue would look nice? Fold top down on bed so you can see light colored sheets. Do you have any artwork in room? A large light colored piece would look nice tying in bed colors. Another idea I love- be sure to have a large mirror in room to bounce light off. Hope this helps my friend!

      • That helps a lot! Cream is easy but the blue you suggest intrigues me. I would be stepping out of my comfort zone finding the right shade to complement the BM Algonquin Trail. I will be contacting you soon for your expertise. Thank you, as always.
