Sneak Peak of New Office Building Venture

July 22, 2017

Hey everyone! I shared with you a new business office I am working on that was being built here. Just the framing was up at that time. I wanted to give you an update how the project is coming along:

Useless Corner Shelves

June 27, 2017

My daughter Meg has been preparing and getting her new nursery ready! I am going to be a grandma for the first time! 🙂 I have been helping her with different design suggestions in the room such as paint color and window treatments. But then she asked me what I thought about corner shelves:

When I asked her what she was going to use these corner shelves for, she said  that she needed shelving for baby supplies, books, etc.  I told her to take another look at them and think of what could possibly fit on these little floating shelves:

Nothing! Nothing fits on these tiny, miniature, fake shelves.  A waste of time, money and space I told her. It is not possible to put anything on these small shelves but maybe a little bud vase:

Most floating corner shelves are rounded and are approximately 12” in radius. What can you possibly fit on a tiny shelf like that? One little 6” vase? So impractical. (Can you tell I am a little biased against corner shelves?) 🙂

I convinced her to use the wall space next to the corner of wall. Even a couple of wall shelves at only 24” wide will give you much more room to place items:

She is going to buy three of these 36” shelves  and arrange over each other. She will have a lot more valuable space on her shelves than she would have on those tiny corner shelves!

So if you are thinking of purchasing floating corner shelves for your home, please reconsider. They are pretty useless and do not even look nice.

That’s all I have to say on corner shelves. Anyone a fan of them? 🙂

Trim- It’s All About the Size

June 20, 2017

I recently worked with a client who had questions regarding the trim in her home:

We are currently redoing the exterior of our house to have more craftsman look. So, now that we are at the point of putting trim around new windows and doors, we are starting to be forced to know what we will do with the interior. We currently love the wood floors and the style of the new front door, despite that it’s darker than we anticipated.

I’m hoping you are comfortable as one designer’s opinion of what would look best if we want to continue integrating craftsman style, yet contemporary mixed in, into the inside. Here is what we are debating:

1. White trim or stained trim (I think white will brighten and not make it so much brown as we currently have going on).

If we do wide white trim (craftsman look above doors), do we do white doors or attempt to re-stain our doors. Or, buy new doors – white or stained? “

My first thought, before even considering the color of the new trim, was the size of the baseboard that currently exists. Looking at the photo, the molding looks a bit too small and out of proportion with the wall:Read More

Commissioning Custom Artwork

June 2, 2017

It seems as if I have been looking for years for that new piece of perfect artwork to hang over my living room fireplace:

new art

It is not easy finding that perfect piece! Perfect size, perfect colors and perfect price. Impossible! I researched a bit and decided to go to a local artist Sue Dion Art, to have a custom made, just-for-me, perfect piece of artwork commissioned. If you are wondering where to begin having a special piece of art custom made for you, I read an informative article on the Do’s and Don’t when hiring an artist for a commission called The “ Newbie’s” Guide to Commissioning Artwork.  Very helpful and thorough.

The basic questions the artist needed to know to begin, was the finished size I desired, what colors I wanted to be included in the color palette and the style and mood I wanted to convey, soft or bold. The perfect size was measured, (I decided on a canvas print because I needed a large piece and it will also cost much less expensive than a framed piece of art). For the perfect color palette in my living room, it would have to include blue and white:

Hey everyone! Hope you are enjoying this long welcome-to-summer weekend. I just finished a design project at my local,  newly built, local community center:

I was asked by the Mt. Washington Chamber of Commerce if I could decorate one of the community rooms in North Conway, NH. I love this town and area and was very happy and excited to be asked. Here is a before of the room:Read More
