Master Bedroom ReDesign 101- It’s Time for You!

January 6, 2018

Have you updated your master bedroom within the last few years? Does your room always get pushed aside for other projects? Well, let’s make 2018 the year for you to refresh your bedroom retreat:

Maybe you only need a quick mini-facelift with updated accessories. January is home décor sale month so now is the time to purchase new items.

But if you are looking for advice for a complete bedroom do over, this post is for you!

Step One: The Bed.

The bed is the focal point/star of the room. You must make it a statement piece to get that ‘wow’ look for the room. How?

Headboard: Do you love your existing headboard? Are you ready for a change? Have you considered using a headboard only, no side rails or footboard? This is a great choice if your space is at a minimum. I have been suggesting upholstered headboards for bedrooms because they give you the best (modern, classic) look at many different price ranges:

Look at the customer reviews to help narrow your search. Another reason I like using an upholstered headboard is that the fabric helps soften all the hard edges in the room, (walls, dressers, etc.) The color I suggest purchasing is an off white or ivory. Both will work well with both white bedding or beige bedding:

I try to steer away from beige headboards because beige has undertones, strong red or yellow, and may be difficult to find bedding to work well. Look how this headboard is ‘sticking out’ and clashing with the bedding:Read More

Simple & Uncomplicated Furniture Painting

August 31, 2016

Are you still holding on to that special piece of old furniture that you have wanted to paint forever? A reader wrote and asked, “I really would like to paint this little table/bench/chair but I can not figure out which process would be easiest for me. I would really like to give it a try.  Also, can you suggest a few colors that you think  looks best on painted furniture? Thx!”

Well I understand how you might be confused! There are so many different techniques and options today for painting furniture. I am happy to share with you all what has worked best for me, as well as my overall knowledge on painting furniture!

For all of my furniture painting projects, I always turn to my number one paint choice which is  Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan. I LOVE the product because it is so easy to use. No priming is needed and you can use indoors because it is non-toxic and  odor-free. So instead of the process being a chore by worrying about which primer to use and how to prepare the furniture, I feel that using Chalk Paint® makes it a fun and easy venture.  Here is my stash of chalk paint:Read More

Connie’s Mantel Transformation

February 1, 2014

Amazingly, Connie finished her mantel makeover within days! She read all of our suggestions and comments here and got right to work. This is the note she wrote:

Dear Kelly,

I finally did it! The fireplace is painted. Cannot image why I waited so long…although I suspect it falls into the “laziness-getting-my-own-projects-done” category.

It was an easy fun project. Took a little time, but it was worth it. Cleaned with a Magic Eraser (the magic is TSP, ya know), glued on a wooden applique from Hobby Lobby, then painted with a paint + primer. Allowed to dry, then very lightly hand-distressed. Voilà! A fireplace that fits the room.

Thanks for all your readers’ comments. Sometimes it takes a little nudge for us all, every now and then to ‘get to it’…even though I honestly knew I should have painted this two years ago when we acquired it.

Regards, Connie

Here again is Connie’s Before:

Just gorgeous! And did you notice the detail she added:

I love the little details that make a piece stand out individually, don’t you? I am glad she distressed the finish also, looks soft and unique. I was truly astonished that she finished it so quickly. I think she already knew she wanted to paint, she was just looking for a little confirmation that was the way to go. We all run into those situations when it is our own home, always second guessing ourselves.

Thank you Connie, for sending in a real dilemma for us to solve and/or make suggestions for! You did a wonderful job. Another project down.

Do you all agree that the mantel looks gorgeous and works in the room better? You can see even more photos of Connie’s mantel transformation here.

Jazzy Statement Chairs

November 18, 2013

Don’t you just love one-of-a-kind statement chairs? A chair that is full of personality and uniqueness?:

chair

I have to admit I was pretty excited when One Kings Lane contacted me last week to help introduce their new Decor Resource Center to my blog readers. They knew I loved accent statement chairs and asked if I would share one of my favorite chairs. Here is a chair I just finished painting and had reupholstered:

I have always loved the shape of this chair. According to the resource guide, my chair is similar to Renaissance Revival Chair, 1870. Their resource guide is great that you can look up the history of your chair from Ancient civilizations to Modern American Design. There are illustrations of each chair that includes a detailed history:

When designing a statement chair, the first step is finding a chair that you love, a piece that gets you excited(no matter what it looks like before):

Then I decide where the chair will be going, so I can work with the existing furnishings. I put together this fabric palette that will work well:

I think statement chairs add life to a room by being a centerpiece that accents the rest of the decor. When people enter the room, their eyes are drawn to it. Here are a couple of my favorite chairs I have saved:

Sometimes a room needs a chair as a finishing touch once everything is in place. Do you have any statement chairs in your home? Now is the time to search the internet or flea markets for a signature chair that can be reupholstered, repainted or restored to finish off the room!

PS I wanted to add a couple pictures of the whole fireplace that a reader requested. She wanted to see the whole thing. Here you go Terri!
