Steps When Planning a Kitchen Renovation 101

July 28, 2018

This summer I have been working with a local couple on their complete vacation home makeover. They decided to start with the kitchen and wanted me to discuss the right steps to follow when planning a complete redo of their kitchen. My first suggestion to them was to find a contractor to work with. That is not easy I know! The contractor will be able to hire the sub-contractors needed for demolition, electrical work, plumbing, permits, etc. Meanwhile, you will have to chose the components that are going into the new space and if you want to avoid stress later, these steps will help guide you in the overall process.

They are redesigning the kitchen area top to bottom. Here is a before photo:

Step One for the Kitchen:

As I tell all of my clients, their first big decision should be the countertop. (the most expensive item in the room and least amount of selections.) Right now both quartz and granite are still the most popular choices. My biggest tip when buying a new countertop is to GO to where the stone is whole. You can look at the little samples and online to get an idea of what you like, but you must go to stone yard to choose your large piece for counters to see exactly which piece you are getting because every piece is unique:

Updating Your Trim/Molding

July 14, 2018

Are you wanting to change your look in a room, but stained molding is stopping/preventing you from getting the fresh, clean and updated look you are yearning for? I have another solution. No, I am not talking about gorgeous historical or custom made trim work like this:

I am talking about the too small and thin stained molding that looks like eyeliner on the top and bottom of your wall:

Lessons On the Other Side of Buying/Selling a Home

July 7, 2018

fter all of these years giving advice to people buying or selling a home, it is very strange being on the other side of the fence . I have learned a few  interesting facts I thought you might enjoy.

For instance, I thought my home was decorated well:

But not to the realtor. She made me take everything down and now it looks so empty to me:

She did that in almost every room. At least I have good wall colors! I just read an article that said that grays and whites are best and red is the worst color to paint interior walls because it is strongly disliked by many. BUT, the same article says red is a great front door color and it is universally well received. Speaking of front doors,  the biggest boost came from a black or charcoal gray front door—studies found that homes with a front door in one of these colors could sell for $6,271 more than expected! sourceRead More

Home Office Bookshelves Complete & How to Find Stuff for Styling Bookshelves

June 30, 2018

The original plans were that our new office would be finished by the end of May. What is the date today? July 1. Has this ever happened to you? Of course it has.

But it  is coming out beautifully. My husband Mike has put a lot of time and work into designing and building these shelves. I thought before the final show of the room, I would give you a few ideas on how to find items to display to make your bookshelves beautiful!:

new shelvesBefore I can even start to decorate; BIG TIP: When you hire electricians for a job, make sure you tell them exactly where the plugs will be. I assumed, wrong, that they would put the plugs close to bottom of shelf or anywhere else besides where they put them in the middle of the wall. Duh. So before I do anything, I have to cover the plugs:

Better. My first place to look for items to style the shelves is shopping my own home. In closets, basement and cupboards. I have tons of stuff from over the years! I knew that the very top shelf of the bookcase would look best with one simple accessory that one, looks good and two, takes up room. That can be a tray or I like to use a basket:Read More

Did You Know??

June 16, 2018

Thought I would entertain you this weekend with a few fun decorating facts that you will enjoy!

Did you know??

*   For all of the paint choices available, 80% of the time we use only 20% of all colors?

*   One pair of pillows on a sofa always looks skimpy. Better to use two pairs, in contrasting colors, patterns and textures to bring your sofa to the next level.

*   You can easily and inexpensively lighten up any room by bringing in a straw/jute area rug for the warmer weather.

*   Why blue, green and violet are the # 1 bedroom paint color choice? These colors are considered cool and restful and tend to recede and contract. On the other side of the color wheel,  red, yellow and orange are warm and active colors. They tend to advance and expand your walls. Dark colors advance and light colors recede.Read More
