The Inspired Room Book Tour

November 6, 2015

The Inspired Room2

Melissa Michael’s new book The Inspired Room was released this week, (isn’t the cover beautiful?) and to celebrate, she’s inviting her blogger friends to share posts about how we were inspired to decorate a room in our home.

The room that popped immediately in my head was my guest room redesign. I recently finished decorating a bedroom in our NH home that I would finally be pleased to have guests stay over.

This was the guest room when we first moved in:

old guest room

Pretty sad guest room. Then by chance, I found this great headboard screen at Pier1 and the room took off from there. It was my inspiration piece for the room! So much better looking after don’t you agree?:

After:

I found a great turquoise color I loved using the BM Color Capture App here. It is an easy tool to use to help you find the perfect paint color. I used many items that were already in the room and ‘borrowed’ the turquoise chair from another room. Love that free shopping!

I think the room came out nice and comfy and is ready for guests. Plus our view out the window is a bonus!:

You will love Melissa’s new book! It is filled with beautiful photos just like her first book, Love The Home You Have . I bought my copy this week and am enjoying each page. I love her laid back style of writing and decorating. And the photography is gorgeous!

What Candice Says About Color

October 24, 2015

new neutrals

Candice Olson- Design Superstar! And she is as nice and down to Earth in real life as she is on TV. She made us laugh with her jokes about her height, (over 6 feet tall!) her husband, her kids and even Chico. She told us that her ‘overnight success’ only took 23 years to achieve!

candice

She spoke to a small group of us last Saturday morning in High Point at my favorite store of the whole Market- Surya. I loved it and you would too. It was on my list to visit because of their accessories. Wow! It was an accessory superstore! Beautiful lamps, rugs, bedding, pillows, poufs, ottomans and so much more.

Here are some of the highlights of what Candice had to say:

She told us that today’s new neutrals transcend style. A core palette of cool grays through warm taupes and creams provide a versatile backdrop for any environment.

neutrals

We are moving into a very organic phase in home design. The colors being used are a nature inspired palette. We want to bring the outdoors in! Neutrals can be light, such as grays and taupes, or neutrals can be dark such as brown.

Her design style is using neutrals and layering the room with contrasts such as texture and patterns. Neutrals are non-committal colors so they bring a long life span to a space and easily changed with pops of color with accessories.

Candice brings life to a room using combinations of light and dark, warm and cool and matte and sheen in paint colors, furnishings and accessories. She likes accessories in small doses that ‘tickles’ the room like pinks and oranges.

Question Time With Candice:

* What do you think of Benjamin Moore’s color of the year- Simply White?

CO: I love it! It’s clean and fresh and works wonderfully with the organic and neutral palettes.

* Is gray going to continue being popular?

CO: Gray is still very popular and will continue to be a strong neutral.

* What other colors are being used in the new neutral color palette?

CO: Greige is becoming even more popular especially working with grays.

* I actually raised my hand like an excited kid and asked her if she thought her Five Favorite Neutrals still worked well and if she still used herself?

CO: Absolutely! I still think they are great colors and I use them often as well as in different shades.

It was really exciting meeting her! I do wish I had a better picture with her:

I will let you know what she said about blues and blue-green color palettes in my newsletter next week.

I’m not sure how ‘new’ they are, but what do you think of the ‘new neutrals’?  Gray and beige=Greige? Easy to decorate with neutrals? Too boring for you? Soothing? Comforting?

I have to give a shout-out to my friend Julie for taking better notes than me!

Hope you are having great weekend everyone!

Benjamin Moore 2016 Color Of The Year

October 7, 2015

If you have not already heard on social media, Benjamin Moore has chosen the color Simply White OC-117 as the color for 2016.

Benjamin_Moore_Color_of_the_Year_2016

Simply White is a warm white without all of those pesky undertones to worry about contrasting with. It is a very constant color and does not change in various lighting sources. A beautiful neutral that I am excited about!:

I read an interesting article from Architectural Digest today featuring Ellen O’Neill who is the creative director at Benjamin Moore and the mastermind of choosing the colors of the year, here. She stated when asked, how did white become a color of interest?:

We were in Paris at Maison et Objet in January, and we had just come off of a photoshoot all about whites. Then it was the summer of the white shirtdress. Even last week with the pope—another gift from the universe—you’re looking at millions of people lining the streets and you can find him. It’s strong. It’s directing your eye. It’s a beacon.”

Did you notice all the white on the fashion runway this past summer? A color always seems to appear in the fashion industry first, then it is brought into our homes.

Simply White OC-117 is cleansing and fresh. Why do you think so many people love white kitchens? I think it is because they not only love the clean, fresh, uncluttered look but also because a white room is never trendy or dated.

What do you think of Simply White with wood finishes?:

So what do you think of the the new color of the year, Simply White? I think it is a beautiful and sophisticated color that will not go out of style. I’m in! Why not white? Let me know what you think!

Finishing Touches On Bath Update

September 8, 2015

Did you all have a nice long Holiday weekend? Any projects completed? I finished up in my master bath with all the fun details and accessories:

new bath

Remember that little brown table in the room?:

table

Well I had fun painting it with Chalk Paint® . I do not think I will ever go through all the work again, with only so-so results by using regular paint to paint furniture. Chalk Paint® is so easy and the finish is suburb.

Before:

After painting with three coats of Pure White and two coats of Provence on the drawers. Then a coat of clear wax and that’s it!:

No priming or sanding involved when using chalk paint. I did have to refresh myself back to my post on instructions here, using the Chalk Paint® . After you paint, (letting dry approximately one hour between coats) you then apply the wax. I used the clear wax for this project. Then after waiting 24 hours to dry, I polished and buffed for a beautiful finish:

new table

I really love how it came out! (except for the crooked toilet paper photobomb)

I knew the room was going to be a challenge because of the existing tub and tile that could not be changed at this time. By painting the walls a color that worked with the tub and then adding splashes of a bold, modern color, (turquoise), the room has a more updated and beautiful look:

I think it came out so well it should be named ‘Bath Of The Month’. What do you think House Beautiful Magazine? 🙂

Don’t give up hope on those existing items you can not change. Work with them and it will all work out beautifully.

I even changed the knobs from Target, for only $40.00 total. I love the way they change color in the light. Before:

Which Gray To Paint Kitchen Cabinets?

August 3, 2015

A reader recently sent me this photo below asking for help with selecting a gray paint color for her kitchen cabinets:

kitchen

She is going to take small steps with her kitchen redesign and wanted to tackle the cabinets first. No ‘white or cream,’ she screamed. (She did not really scream, I just couldn’t resist.) A gray color is what she and her husband decided for their cabinets.

The floors are staying for now, so we will work around them. What grays do you think might look good with the yellow flooring? I would suggest staying away from grays with blue undertones such as Coventry Gray HC-169 or Nimbus Gray 2131-50:

nimbus gray2

Ben Moore Nimbus Gray 2131-50

Why not a blue gray? Blue and yellow are almost opposite colors on the color wheel and when you put the two together, you have high contrast. The colors will complete against each other and the room will not feel inviting or relaxed because of the high energy of the two contrasting colors.

For a more natural and comforting room, I would choose a gray green to work with the yellow floor.

Here are a couple gray color options with green undertones that would work great:

pashmina                  thunder

Ben Moore Pashmina AF-100                         Ben Moore Thunder AF-685

They work well because the green undertones in the paint play nice with the yellow flooring. No contrasting or competing.

Another favorite green gray for cabinets that has been popular for awhile now is Ben Moore Fieldstone 1558:

I think there is good reason why the paint color Fieldstone is so popular for cabinets! Beautiful. One other suggestion I offered on the cabinets was to remove the plate rail from the top of cabinets. That will also help update the look.

What other pretty grays have you seen used for cabinets in the kitchen or bath?

Updated Guest Bedroom

July 31, 2015

I am enjoying a nice, long two week vacation in our New Hampshire home. My husband and I do not get up here too often because of his business in RI. This is the longest we have ever stayed in our NH home at one time!! We both love it here and this is going to be our forever home.

Besides taking day trips, we tackled a few projects we have been wanting to do. The bath I shared here is complete so I moved on into the guest room. I have been wanting to update the room but not get into a big production with time and money. Do you know what I mean?

Remember my post here, where I was using the Ben Moore Color Capture App to find a paint color that worked well with a new comforter? There were a few color options, but I really liked the Ben Moore Gentleman’s Gray 2062-20:

gentlemans gray2

A really beautiful turquoise blue!

Here was the guest room before:

Does it look like a guest room where you would like to spend some time?

I am really happy with how the room came out with just a few changes. I only painted the one wall so that the wall screen would be more pronounced. Not a lot of time or investment which is great. How do you like this Gentleman’s Gray paint color?

Thanks for stopping by. Have a great weekend everyone!
