Working With An Unusual Trim Color

February 23, 2016

Finding a wall color is difficult enough. But when you have to work around an unusual color such as this trim below:

It is really challenging!  Can you tell what undertone the trim has?

This is my living room in our NH home. The previous owner thought taupe was a good neutral to use for All the trim in the house!:

Review of Gray Undertones

February 3, 2016

Undertones. We have learned enough about color to know we can not ignore them. But I have found that knowing the undertones of a color makes the color selection process much easier and less stressful.

So I thought I would do a little review as a reminder of the undertones of gray. Gray is still very popular right now and we should be aware of what makes up the color so we can be educated when choosing a color for our home.  Gray has the undertones of blue, green, violet and taupe:

Blue Undertone Grays:

The most popular grays with blue undertones are Coventry Gray HC-169:

Color Selection Made Easy

January 31, 2016

Today we are flooded with so much information on how to choose the perfect paint color for our homes. Blogs, magazines, Pinterest, Houzz, Facebook, HGTV and many other sources. We read all the different info and then find ourselves questioning if the color we chose is still in style, if the undertones are working,  do the colors flow correctly, etc. If you are like me, too much information on any subject just makes me more confused and stressed!

When it comes to choosing paint colors, I believe that if you go back to basics, the process will be much easier for you. Here are a few tips and advice on Paint Selection 101 to use next time you feel overwhelmed selecting a paint color:

*Remember that the goal of the wall color is to find a color that works with everything you own and love. It works as the background scene. The walls are not supposed to be the ‘star’ of the room.

Two More Color Options for Oak Cabinets

January 4, 2016

Yes, I do still suggest looking at green paint colors for your kitchen walls when you are working with oak cabinets, such as here. BUT, I thought I would share a couple other paint color options that also work well:

Kelly Bernier 5 14 kitchen

The paint color above is Benjamin Moore Firenze AF-225. Doesn’t it work well with the cabinets? A perfect compliment with oak or maple kitchen cabinets. I had chosen Firenze for our kitchen when we first moved in 8 years ago:

I was still happy with the color, but when we put in new granite counters and backsplash last year, I decided to also change the wall color for a whole new look:

I sampled many colors, (just like you!) before I finally decided to paint with Ben Moore Chelsea Gray:

I love it! The dark gray works well with my cabinets, backsplash and countertops. So if you are looking for other possibilities to work with your oak/maple cabinets, take a look at Firenze AF-225 or Chelsea Gray HC-168. Always good to have other options!

A little project I finally finished last week in the kitchen was covering a couple stools:

It really was not as difficult as I thought. I just took the screws out of the bottom of seat:

Then I laid out and cut the fabric, (fabric is same as window treatments):

I pulled the fabric tight and stapled. For the corners, I just folded like a present and stapled tight:

What a wonderful difference:

I love when those little details work out so pretty, don’t you? Thanks for stopping by everyone!

What I Love About Pantone’s 2016 Color Choice

December 4, 2015

I’m sure you have seen the announcement of Pantone’s colors for 2016. What do you think of the color duo?

            Pantone Serenity            Pantone Rose Quartz

I think we assume the color of the year will be a color picked exclusively for interior design and paint color. But how often have we used Pantone’s color choice of the year for our walls?

pantone previous colors

Rarely ever. Pantone has a system that helps manufacturers define color precisely. Every year, the company polls décor and fashion designers, as well as manufacturers and retailers, on what colors they plan to use, led by Leatrice Eiseman, to pick the color of the coming year. Pantone tips off some marketing partners so that they can create products, such as Sephora cosmetics and Keurig coffee makers, that use the colors:

KitchenAid’s iconic Stand Mixer in Guava Glaze, a warm pink tone informed by PANTONE 13-1520 Rose Quartz.

What am I loving about the color combination? Because, have you seen the fabric using Pantone’s 2016 color choices together!?

The colors are absolutely gorgeous together! And it is the fabric we will be bringing in to our interiors:

And soon there will be a lot more selection in accessories and furnishings! I like the individual two colors but what I really love is the color combo together. I predict we will be using the colors together in fabric and other accessories more than just one of the colors alone.

What I took away the most from reading all about the new Pantone 2016 color:

“We wanted compassion, which today a lot of people are looking for,” Ms. Eiseman says. Pantone’s news release describes the colors as “inducing feelings of stability, constancy, comfort and relaxation,” and argues that they “create balance in a chaotic world.” source

I don’t know if I would paint my walls pink, but here is a couple of beautiful rooms that might make me change my mind!:

ROSE QUARTZ & SERENITY COLOR PAIRINGS

Whether in soft or hard surface material, the pairing of Rose Quartz and Serenity brings calm and relaxation. Appealing in all finishes, matte, metallic and glossy, the engaging combo joins easily with other mid-tones including greens and purples, rich browns, and all shades of yellow and pink. Add in silver or hot brights for more splash and sparkle.

And it certainly is better than the nail polish color last year, Marsala. What do you think of the combo? Would love to hear.

The Inspired Room Book Tour

November 6, 2015

The Inspired Room2

Melissa Michael’s new book The Inspired Room was released this week, (isn’t the cover beautiful?) and to celebrate, she’s inviting her blogger friends to share posts about how we were inspired to decorate a room in our home.

The room that popped immediately in my head was my guest room redesign. I recently finished decorating a bedroom in our NH home that I would finally be pleased to have guests stay over.

This was the guest room when we first moved in:

Pretty sad guest room. Then by chance, I found this great headboard screen at Pier1 and the room took off from there. It was my inspiration piece for the room! So much better looking after don’t you agree?:

After:

I found a great turquoise color I loved using the BM Color Capture App here. It is an easy tool to use to help you find the perfect paint color. I used many items that were already in the room and ‘borrowed’ the turquoise chair from another room. Love that free shopping!

I think the room came out nice and comfy and is ready for guests. Plus our view out the window is a bonus!:

You will love Melissa’s new book! It is filled with beautiful photos just like her first book, Love The Home You Have . I bought my copy this week and am enjoying each page. I love her laid back style of writing and decorating. And the photography is gorgeous!
