Another Front Door Color Option

March 28, 2020

It’s that time of year again. With the weather warming, we are turning our attention to the outside of our homes. Now that we are spending even more time at home, it might be a good time to get some of those projects out of the way!

This is also the beginning of my busy season for the year. I have seen a slight drop in color consultations online, (a complete drop-off for local  visits) but there still a few I have been working on. Here is one of my favorites:

Front door

Hello Kelly,
I understand you charge a small fee for a color consult. I’m okay with that. My question is that I am having trouble coming up with a color for my front door. We are changing the front door, so this will no longer be the door that we will be using. I want a color that will make my house look elegant but not  too risky.
We’ve considered using a dark navy blue or even black. The problem I am having is the color of the brick underneath the bay windows. The color of the brick will not be changed.
I’ve included a picture of the front and back of my home, so you can see the color of the deck which matches the shingles on our roof. The first picture is not a realistic color of the shingles. They actually match the deck
.

We are open to any suggestions!
Oh and the rails on the front porch will also be changed, depending on the color of the front door.
Thank you for any suggestions you may be able to provide.

Lydia front door

Such a beautiful home and yard!

My first thought was that a black door would be perfect. Even when I saw the roof in the back of the house and that it was not as dark as I thought, I still thought black was a perfect choice to work with the brick, siding and roof.

BUT.. .the more I looked at the front of their home and how very impressive it looked, I thought a strong, wooden stained door would bring even more interest. When I suggested it to the homeowner, she said that they had not thought about a stained door and really liked the option! This one below was my favorite and I think it is the one they are going to go with:

I have been seeing more and more stained wooden front doors and they are beautiful. Elegant. Works with many siding colors such as beige, gray, white and creams, yellows, greens, blues, stonework and even brick. One tip on the color stain you might consider- I would try to stay away from a cherry color because it may clash with siding color, (such as beiges) and also red brick.

I love the darker stains the best. Aren’t they all gorgeous? So if you are looking for a new front door color, take a look at the natural stained wooden doors. Very impressive looking! Don’t you agree?

PS If you are thinking of staining over a painted door, there are many DIY directions online you can find.

Stay safe everyone!

A Beautiful Exterior Transformation With Before & After Photos

July 27, 2019

It has been a busy season for me with exterior paint color consultations and I really enjoy helping with color questions.  I especially love when the client sends me AFTER photos! Like my new friend Bethany who wrote asking if I would help her select paint colors for her home’s exterior:

Bethany new Front

Beth first wrote that she found me on Pinterest. She was ready to paint over the brick and needed a little color help. I told her that it is always harder to choose color for your own home! Isn’t that so true? She was actually getting her home ready to sell and wanted to brighten it up a bit. Here is the before:Read More

Martha’s Vineyard Stonington Gray Exterior Project

January 26, 2019

What color do you think of when you picture a home exterior on Martha’s Vineyard? I think of light and airy beach colors. And that is just what the customer ordered- “I want gray and white beachy!”.

The first paint color that came to my mind was Benjamin Moore’s Stonington Gray HC-170:

A modern and fresh medium toned gray with a slight blue undertone.  I have suggested this paint color many times on exterior consultations. The client sampled on a large poster board and loved it.

Here is a before photo of her home:

My friend thought she would like the whole exterior, including the bottom lattice, painted in the same paint color. But after priming the lattice:Read More

Color Crush: Van Deusen Blue

September 1, 2018

Definitely one of my favorite blues. This grayish blue paint color is from the Benjamin Moore Historical Collection and has been a preferred blue for many homeowners over the years.

I love seeing it used in a semi-gloss finish on cabinets:

This color is a very popular color choice for cabinets in both kitchen and baths: (Do you see the difference in the color with different lighting? That is why it is so important for you to sample paint colors in your home with your lighting.)

Color Crush: Benjamin Moore’s Wrought Iron

If you are searching for a rich, warm black that adds drama, then Wrought Iron 2124-10 is the perfect choice for you. You will absolutely love this color!  :

Benjamin Moore’s Wrought Iron is a black/gray paint color that is less harsh than black. Many think of this color as a black, but  I think it can also fit in the category of charcoal gray:

It is a deep dark gray with a softness and warmth to it. When compared to other blacks it is noticeably lighter and more gray:Read More
