Favorite Online Curtain Resources

August 19, 2017

When doing online room consultations, one of my most requested services is finding the perfect window treatments. I have found curtain panels are the best way to create dimension and add softness to any room at the best inexpensive cost.  From luxury to the budget friendly, here are my favorite online drapery sources in no particular order:

I have highlighted  and linked the company names to bring you straight to the window curtains category in case you wanted to save  this page as a quick resource to use at a later date.

How To Warm Up an All White Kitchen

August 12, 2017

A reader recently wrote and asked,  “I have always wanted an all white kitchen and now that I have my dream white kitchen, it seems boring and uninteresting. Do you have any suggestions on how I can warm up my cold, sterile looking kitchen? ”

I have come across this dilemma with clients before. We see all of these beautiful photos of all white kitchens and want to duplicate the look so everything brought into the room is white. I too love the look of white kitchens, but sometimes they can feel too plain and lack personality.

My first suggestion is to bring fabric into the room. Using fabric can soften a space as well as bringing in color with items such as window treatments:

Selecting a Sofa For Beige Painted Walls

November 12, 2016

My sister-in-law recently asked if I could help her find a new sofa for her family room. It is a well used, busy room for an active family and is a really nice and bright sunny spot in their home.

Lynn’s existing family room wall color is Ben Moore Shaker Beige:

Before she even went shopping, I gave her a few tips to remember:

*   Bring a painted sample  of your wall color to the store. The bigger the better I say.

*   FYI- When looking at various sofas, if you like the comfort and design of the piece, but not the fabric, there are other choices of fabric to choose from. There are usually around six to twelve other colors of fabric that you can choose from for the same cost. There are also other fabric options, but that is getting into custom and that means the price tag will go up. Just so you know that you have other choices besides the sample on the floor. The store never seems to mention that!Read More

What I Love About Pantone’s 2016 Color Choice

December 4, 2015

I’m sure you have seen the announcement of Pantone’s colors for 2016. What do you think of the color duo?

     Serenity                 rose quartz

            Pantone Serenity            Pantone Rose Quartz

I think we assume the color of the year will be a color picked exclusively for interior design and paint color. But how often have we used Pantone’s color choice of the year for our walls?

pantone previous colors

Rarely ever. Pantone has a system that helps manufacturers define color precisely. Every year, the company polls décor and fashion designers, as well as manufacturers and retailers, on what colors they plan to use, led by Leatrice Eiseman, to pick the color of the coming year. Pantone tips off some marketing partners so that they can create products, such as Sephora cosmetics and Keurig coffee makers, that use the colors:

What am I loving about the color combination? Because, have you seen the fabric using Pantone’s 2016 color choices together!?

The colors are absolutely gorgeous together! And it is the fabric we will be bringing in to our interiors:

And soon there will be a lot more selection in accessories and furnishings! I like the individual two colors but what I really love is the color combo together. I predict we will be using the colors together in fabric and other accessories more than just one of the colors alone.

What I took away the most from reading all about the new Pantone 2016 color:

“We wanted compassion, which today a lot of people are looking for,” Ms. Eiseman says. Pantone’s news release describes the colors as “inducing feelings of stability, constancy, comfort and relaxation,” and argues that they “create balance in a chaotic world.” source

I don’t know if I would paint my walls pink, but here is a couple of beautiful rooms that might make me change my mind!:

ROSE QUARTZ & SERENITY COLOR PAIRINGS

Whether in soft or hard surface material, the pairing of Rose Quartz and Serenity brings calm and relaxation. Appealing in all finishes, matte, metallic and glossy, the engaging combo joins easily with other mid-tones including greens and purples, rich browns, and all shades of yellow and pink. Add in silver or hot brights for more splash and sparkle.

And it certainly is better than the nail polish color last year, Marsala. What do you think of the combo? Would love to hear.

What Candice Says About Color

October 24, 2015

new neutrals

Candice Olson- Design Superstar! And she is as nice and down to Earth in real life as she is on TV. She made us laugh with her jokes about her height, (over 6 feet tall!) her husband, her kids and even Chico. She told us that her ‘overnight success’ only took 23 years to achieve!

She spoke to a small group of us last Saturday morning in High Point at my favorite store of the whole Market- Surya. I loved it and you would too. It was on my list to visit because of their accessories. Wow! It was an accessory superstore! Beautiful lamps, rugs, bedding, pillows, poufs, ottomans and so much more.

Here are some of the highlights of what Candice had to say:

She told us that today’s new neutrals transcend style. A core palette of cool grays through warm taupes and creams provide a versatile backdrop for any environment.

neutrals

We are moving into a very organic phase in home design. The colors being used are a nature inspired palette. We want to bring the outdoors in! Neutrals can be light, such as grays and taupes, or neutrals can be dark such as brown.

Her design style is using neutrals and layering the room with contrasts such as texture and patterns. Neutrals are non-committal colors so they bring a long life span to a space and easily changed with pops of color with accessories.

Candice brings life to a room using combinations of light and dark, warm and cool and matte and sheen in paint colors, furnishings and accessories. She likes accessories in small doses that ‘tickles’ the room like pinks and oranges.

Question Time With Candice:

* What do you think of Benjamin Moore’s color of the year- Simply White?

CO: I love it! It’s clean and fresh and works wonderfully with the organic and neutral palettes.

* Is gray going to continue being popular?

CO: Gray is still very popular and will continue to be a strong neutral.

* What other colors are being used in the new neutral color palette?

CO: Greige is becoming even more popular especially working with grays.

* I actually raised my hand like an excited kid and asked her if she thought her Five Favorite Neutrals still worked well and if she still used herself?

CO: Absolutely! I still think they are great colors and I use them often as well as in different shades.

It was really exciting meeting her! I do wish I had a better picture with her:

I will let you know what she said about blues and blue-green color palettes in my newsletter next week.

I’m not sure how ‘new’ they are, but what do you think of the ‘new neutrals’?  Gray and beige=Greige? Easy to decorate with neutrals? Too boring for you? Soothing? Comforting?

I have to give a shout-out to my friend Julie for taking better notes than me!

Hope you are having great weekend everyone!
