Step by Step Guide on How To Style a Cozy Corner

February 23, 2019

Are you looking for ideas to fill an empty corner?  Maybe a little space in the corner of your living room or bedroom that you are having trouble decorating? One idea is to create a cozy little niche:

I wanted to ‘dress up’ a corner in my spare bedroom. It’s pretty simple- all you need is a comfortable or pretty, (not always one and the same), chair to get started:

You can use pillows or throws, or both,  to dress up your chair:

Did You Know? Informative and Useful Decorating Facts

January 19, 2019

I have gathered a few more helpful decorating tips that you may or may not have heard before. Some are just reminder guidelines, but are still working well and worth looking at again.

Did you know how well green goes with natural and stained wood? One great example is Ben Moore’s Carolina Gull 2138-40:

So pretty. The trim is BM Misted Green 2138-50 and the ceiling is painted with Gray Lake 2138-70.  Green is still my favorite color working with natural/stained woodwork because green works so well with the yellow/orange oak undertones.

Did you you know odd-number groupings are more interesting than evens? Display frames or objects in threes or fives for an eye-pleasing arrangement.

That is a good decorating rule to be reminded of! Look around your home- are you decorating in odd numbers?

How I am Decorating Rental Home Using What I Already Own

January 12, 2019

I thought I would share a couple photos of how I decorated the rental we are staying in with our existing furnishings. Pulled pieces from different bedrooms, living room and storage to put together a few pretty rooms.  Might as well make it nice while we are living here!

Remember the spare room we had to fix for guests coming to visit here?

Before:

I used our old bedframe that was previously in a guest room in our old home. Lamps I pulled out from storage, to work with carpet. The bedding and even window treatments are also taken from closets where I was storing them.

Double Post! Readers’ Questions Answered PLUS Stunning Before & After Exterior Photos

January 5, 2019

I have not written a post in awhile, so I thought I would start the New Year off with an double dose of decorating fun! Here are a few questions I have received recently from readers:

Hi Kelly,

“This is what I am working with. I recently purchased a home that has emerald/forest green kitchen and bath counter tops the cabinets were a medium brown and had gold hardware. Since replacing the counter tops is not an option and I am working with them. I have chosen a grey almost slightly shaded brown for my cabinet color and have purchases a light grey for my walls which flows into my dining and den area where I have a large wall that has a rock fireplace with built inns. My problem is in the den there is chair rail molding not the pretty kind and taking it up is not on my want to do list should I paint the chair rail the same color as the wall to make the room flow or should I make them pop. I will be painting kitchen and hopefully funding some type of backsplash I am considering just going with hunter green subway tile and just going with it lol. “Also should I paint the built ins the same color as the walls or a contrasting color like the color of my kitchen cabinets also I want to brighten up the stone fireplace but not to much and am unsure if I should keep the fireplace mantel the original wood because I am adding a custom variated wood island in the kitchen area. I trying my best to blend it all together without it looking to log cabin style lol going for more farmhouse.”

Before photo:

My advice for her back splash working with the emerald green counters, is NOT to buy a solid green subway tile. I think it will be too much green! Here are a couple ideas I would consider to work with the green counter tops for a back splash:

A neutral back splash or a tile with a bit of hunter green in it would work best. Choose the one that will work best with counters and cabinets. I think your kitchen will look great after painting and adding a new back splash!Read More
