Reminder Tip When Using Ready Made Curtains

February 3, 2018

I sometime wish I could afford to have all of my window treatments in the house be custom made. Wouldn’t that be nice to have someone to come into your home , give you great ideas on what would be the best look for your windows, measure and then come back and install these gorgeous, perfect window treatments? Who wouldn’t? Yes, there are custom window treatment specialist to hire, but the price is usually so high.  Right? I have had custom treatments done in my home but not often because of the cost.

So if you are like me, I buy ready made curtains. One tip I wanted to remind you of is when purchasing a pair of panels, always buy TWO sets, (two panels for each side of window). Yes it is more expensive, but the look is so much more pleasing, almost as if they were custom made.

Here is an example I am working on now. I did not follow my own advice and only purchased one set of two for my office window. Thought I could get away with only one panel on each side:

They look ok,  but not really special. Kind of chintzy is what I thought:

They just bothered me because I knew I could easily fix the problem. So I bought another set of two panels and tried them out:

Much nicer and fuller.

So much better, don’t you think? I might like to get a longer rod, or extension piece in the middle of the rod:

So I can extend the curtains more out toward the wall:

Have a great weekend everyone!

Another Example Of Why Darker Paint Colors Look Fabulous with Stained Wood

December 17, 2017

I have been not only getting ready for Christmas this past week, I have also been moving to my new, full time home in New Hampshire:

It has been a crazy couple of weeks, but I am really enjoying myself. I think part of this joy might be that both my kids and the new baby Jameson is coming to spend Christmas here! I can’t wait!

Anyway!   When we moved one of the bedrooms upstairs around, I wanted to use this wood headboard we brought from our previous home in RI that both my husband and I love. When we put against the wall, I really was struck how beautiful the wood looked with the wall color:

Pantone’s 2018 Purple

December 9, 2017

I am sure you have already heard this week on social media that Pantone has announced it’s color of the year for 2018:

2018-Ultra-Violet

Ultra Violet 18-3838. Pantone chose this complex color to reflect a “complex” time. According to Pantone, Ultra Violet is a “provocative yet thoughtful” color. Historically, it’s been associated with nonconformity and spirituality. Pantone also believes this color symbolizes new possibilities and a hopeful future.

I am sure you have also read mixed reviews. People either are liking this color or giving it a definite thumbs down.

But I guess that happens every year, right? I myself love a gorgeous purple! I always have. I would not paint a whole room in it:Read More

Useless Corner Shelves

June 27, 2017

My daughter Meg has been preparing and getting her new nursery ready! I am going to be a grandma for the first time! 🙂 I have been helping her with different design suggestions in the room such as paint color and window treatments. But then she asked me what I thought about corner shelves:

When I asked her what she was going to use these corner shelves for, she said  that she needed shelving for baby supplies, books, etc.  I told her to take another look at them and think of what could possibly fit on these little floating shelves:

Nothing! Nothing fits on these tiny, miniature, fake shelves.  A waste of time, money and space I told her. It is not possible to put anything on these small shelves but maybe a little bud vase:

Most floating corner shelves are rounded and are approximately 12” in radius. What can you possibly fit on a tiny shelf like that? One little 6” vase? So impractical. (Can you tell I am a little biased against corner shelves?) 🙂

I convinced her to use the wall space next to the corner of wall. Even a couple of wall shelves at only 24” wide will give you much more room to place items:

She is going to buy three of these 36” shelves  and arrange over each other. She will have a lot more valuable space on her shelves than she would have on those tiny corner shelves!

So if you are thinking of purchasing floating corner shelves for your home, please reconsider. They are pretty useless and do not even look nice.

That’s all I have to say on corner shelves. Anyone a fan of them? 🙂

Half Walls- Old Becoming New Again.

April 15, 2017

How does that quote go? “ Everything that is old, is new again”? Well here is another example of that:

Half walls are gaining popularity in homes again. They are designed to create a feeling of separation or division, but also impart a feeling of connection and openness at the same time:

Half walls are also called knee walls or pony walls and were very popular in the 70’s. Most half walls are about 3 to 4 feet tall and is a great way to divide a space without closing it in.Read More
