Agree Or Disagree?

short window treatment

I realize window treatments are tricky, but if you do not want your treatments to look out of date, do not let the curtain bottom dangle in the air like the photo above.

Or like this:

Or this:

The reason I am mentioning this again is because a new client I am working with did not know this. She said that she sees them in other homes! I also still see them often in homes that are listed for sale.

It might be confusing to some especially when the shorter treatments are still available to purchase:

I think it is a disservice to homeowners to sell short window treatments!

And please do not be afraid of the fabric catching on fire. In all my years of decorating and all of my research, I have never heard of window panels catching on fire because it was on top of a heater vent.

My advice is if the window can not use full length panels, a shade might be the best solution.

Do you agree or disagree that window treatments should reach the floor or not hang at all?

  1. I don’t like them, but I know two women who do and think that is the way it should be. One is my mother in law and the other is my daughter. I think it’s just a matter of personal preference. So glad we all have the freedom to decorate with what makes us happy! :o)

  2. I was just thinking of getting window panels that hit the bottom of my window (professionally hemmed) for my family room but then I saw this! So right, it looks funny – I have wood blinds and wanted something soft to go with the window. I was afraid full length curtains would look too much since the room is small. Now I am stuck, not sure what to do?!

    • I think long panels would look better Jennifer. It actually will make the window look larger if you hang the rod close to ceiling, then make sure the rod can extend enough that it goes past each side of the window at least 10″. That way you are covering mostly wall and it will make the window appear wider.

  3. I have a problem with two small windows in a 60’s ranch. The windows are 30 high by 50 inches wide and are separated by 12 inches. I’ve put curtains all the way to the floor but it just doesn’t look correc to me. There’s more material beneath the window then the window itself. I also have a standard window (like the ones in your pictures) and a full curtain to the floor looks great….what do I do with the small windows? If I only use the blinds the small windows look unfinished.

  4. Theresa,
What if you treated the two windows as one? Hang rod close to ceiling and be wide enough for both windows. Then that would be nice and wide as well. Do you know what I mean? If not, send me an email.
