Before and After Exterior Using Benjamin Moore Amherst Gray

April 30, 2017

I recently worked with an online client helping to select an exterior paint color for her home. She had decided she wanted a gray and had narrowed her choices down to Ben Moore Chelsea Gray, Amherst Gray and Kendall Charcoal. She sent me a photo where she had already painted samples:

I do love Chelsea Gray. The only problem I have with using this gray outdoors is if the home is in strong sunlight all day. The Chelsea Gray color can seem washed out at times.  My first choice of the three was the Amherst Gray HC-167. I love the depth of this color and that makes it different than the standard gray:

Working With An Unusual Trim Color

February 23, 2016

Finding a wall color is difficult enough. But when you have to work around an unusual color such as this trim below:

It is really challenging!  Can you tell what undertone the trim has?

This is my living room in our NH home. The previous owner thought taupe was a good neutral to use for All the trim in the house!:

Online Color Consultation

September 16, 2015

I was recently contacted by a gentleman in Dallas, Texas. He wondered if I could help him choose colors for the first floor of his large open concept home:

bryan

He was great at giving me details:

* Our new home is predominately painted in warm neutral colors – brown, gold, cream.
* The current color of all trim (base/crown/doors/windows and Kitchen) is Huntington Beige.
* My goal is really to just update the colors in the home. While I like the existing colors – I would like to move away from the golds and browns and move towards a “newer” color pallet.
* Thus far, I have the intention of painting the formal dining room chelsea gray since it is a warmer gray.
* I would really like to focus on the living room, foyer, and kitchen – since they all connect with one another.
* The kitchen cabinets are also painted in Huntington Beige, but were glazed with what appears to be light brown.

So we have two major items to consider when choosing a paint color for this space which is the green undertones of the Huntington Beige trim and the stone fireplace.

bryn room

The first color I thought of was Grant Beige HC-83. It may be a little boring for a color, but it is just beautiful on the walls! Plus, it will work well with both the trim and the stone in fireplace:

Another color I suggested he sample is Sandyhook Gray HC-108. It would be a little more dramatic than the Grant Beige and just as gorgeous:

My thinking behind my choices are that they are both great ‘updated’ neutrals  and both get away from the golds and browns. The Grant Beige and the Sandyhook Gray also have the same undertones as the trim and the stone which will work perfect!

He also stated that he would like to paint the dining room with Chelsea Gray HC-168 which will also work well with either the Grant Beige or Sandyhook Gray.

Both colors can be used with greens, blues, turquoise, grays and many more in accessories and fabric.

He is now looking at my suggestions and going to sample both. I will let you know what he chooses. Hopefully I can ask him to send after photos! What do you think of these color selections?

I am getting on a plane again tomorrow for the next week. I am going to Chicago for my sister’s wedding and the whole family is going! So excited!

Have a great week everyone!

Exterior Grays

May 14, 2015

One question I am asked often is if I have any good recommendations for an exterior gray paint color:

Gray for exteriors is very popular right now. And for good reason- gray is a classic color that works with any exterior color scheme and combination. I think gray works best with white trim or a lighter version of the color.

If you are trying to decide which gray to paint, a good way to start would be to decide which gray undertone do you think will work best with your exterior.

* Remember that if you want blue exterior walls, you have to pick a blue-gray color to prevent it from looking like a baby blue.

Grays with green undertones:

Choosing A Paint Color Is Scary

August 7, 2014

Indecision, uncertainty, stress! It does not matter who you are, everyone gets nervous when getting ready to paint a new wall color in their home.

Since we are redoing our kitchen with granite counters, backsplash and new cabinets, I decided I would like to change the wall color also:

Not such an easy decision is it? Too many colors, not enough time.

Taking my own advice, I painted my first sample poster board with the color I thought I would like.:

test

I looked at it for a few days then painted on wall:

test3

I still was not sure it was the perfect color! Then the decision becomes even more difficult especially when you have more than one person’s opinion to consider. Take my husband for instance who did not like the color at all!

So I asked him for any suggestions because I was tired of stressing out about it! Which of course seemed very easy for him. We had painted our master bedroom this color in our last place, Benjamin Moore Chelsea Gray, and he loved it.

So, another paint sample and poster board:

I do like it and I am going to live with for a few days. I just want you to know that you are not alone when it comes to stressing out over paint colors. Scary business! Stayed tuned….. I will show you the results soon!
