Using Various Shapes To Add Interest

January 25, 2016

I am not talking about geometric shapes and patterns in fabric prints such as chevron, plaid, etc. I am referring to actual shapes such as round, oval, square and rectangle:Read More

A Statement Mirror in Every Room

January 13, 2016

What is the one accessory I suggest using in every room as a great statement piece?

A mirror! Mirrors are a decorator’s best friend, and with good reason — a well-placed mirror makes the most of a room’s natural light, enhances views, opens a small space and adds sparkle to décor.

I recently read an article from Houzz that stated that one of the main design trends we will see in 2016 is Statement Mirrors in the Bathroom:

Emphasis On Wood

January 10, 2016

A ‘trend’ I have been seeing everywhere is Wood. This is not a new trend of course, but at this year’s High Point Market that I attended here, Organix, (made from organic materials), was very much in evidence with many of the vendors:

Since attending the market, I have seen products made from wood not only in lighting and carpeting, but emphasis on using wood and Nature in our interiors is also being seen in accessories, furniture and art:

Isn’t that such a great piece above? So unique and original. It looks like part of a sliding door but I think on it’s own it would still be a beautiful focal point.

I am really loving the Live edge or natural edge which is a style of furniture where the carpenter incorporates the natural edge of the wood into the design of the piece:

Gorgeous! After visiting a local sawmill this past Fall, I have so much admiration for these beautiful, natural pieces of wood.

It really hit me how popular this trend is becoming when I saw these accessories in Target yesterday:

Have you brought any earthy textures or organic forms into your homes? Wood is interesting, natural, touchable and dramatic! Do not worry about mixing styles or materials either. Wood works with glass, metal, other woods, etc. It will distinctly bring character, shape, warmth and texture into your home. Don’t you agree it brings in personality?

Back Home From High Point Market 2015

October 18, 2015

I arrived home today from my adventure at High Point Market and Furnitureland South with my IRN friends from all over the States and Canada. What an exciting and educational trip I had!

I am going to give you all the details later this week but I wanted to share a few highlights because my head is just bursting with information.

The best part of my trip was meeting Candice Olson. She is my all time favorite designer:

candace

She is just as charming and funny in real life! We were able to ask her questions about color and design which I will tell you all about this week. She said that people are still asking her about Chico. haha

The first two days of the conference were held at Furnitureland South which is the largest furniture store in the world. The place is enormous! We had several great, educational seminars from companies such as Houzz, Resale Ready® Home Staging, an Art Gallery, a new design show that is launching soon, Take Five and we also learned about biophilia. No it is not a disease! It actually is what the design world is moving toward for the future.

High Point Market was amazing! I explained here how large the market is and I saw for myself just how big it actually is! I will let you know all the new trends and answer all those questions you and I wondered about.

Although I had a wonderful time, I am glad to be home and happy I will be able to share all the latest new trends and ideas with you. See you tomorrow everyone!

Visiting Open Houses

January 29, 2015

open house

Do you ever stop and visit a new construction Open House, just to see what it looks like inside? I love to tour new houses and look for different decorating ideas and inspiration. Last week I visited a couple homes in Sarasota, FL.:

Blue Wall

This room is pretty but there is one big color faux pas. Can you see what is not working in the room? I DO like the navy blue wall with the white molding. That is something that can be duplicated in your own home. Very nice!

I thought this was a clever idea to use when staging a closet:

You can really use your imagination using colorful bags with contrasting tissue paper to stage different areas in the home. (Although the shirts were distracting to me. What do you think?)

I did notice quite a few of the new construction homes are painted in a grayish beige, greige. This looks like Benjamin Moore Cedar Key.:

Here it was painted in another home:

Which surprised me actually. I visualized Florida homes with all soft blue walls such as Ben Moore Quiet Moments 1563 or Sherwin Williams Sea Salt SW6204.

I am trying not to be too picky here, but I would not suggest using this color of window treatments in the room above with greige walls, (and ok- they are also too thin!).

I did like the wall art with the two sunbursts together:

At our hotel, I thought this artwork display was really great:

I think it is fun visiting Open Houses to peek inside for decorating ideas! How about you?

I find myself visiting Cole & Son and Graham & Brown often, looking at the beautiful patterns and colors and wondering where could I hang wallpaper in my home:

I went on the Graham & Brown site yesterday and learned that for the first time ever, a wallpaper was chosen as Wallpaper of the Year for 2015, Northern Rose:

“Northern Rose was chosen from our design archive, the beautifully painted fresh design in vibrant pink and explosive blue with lush embellishments was picked as it represents the optimism that is spreading across the country as a whole, whilst retaining a certain British, vintage charm.” The company is based in London.

I absolutely love it! I don’t know if it is the blue and pink colors or pattern, but I really want to use this somewhere. How about a car:

Cute! I think it would look great in a bath or powder room. Happy and colorful! Or an entry would look fabulous, don’t you think?

Have you used wallpaper lately? It is easier to install these days and there are gorgeous colors and patterns to choose from. Important question: Does anyone know if it is easier to remove the new wallpaper today than in the old days? Does anyone remember that job?!
