What I Love About Pantone’s 2016 Color Choice

December 4, 2015

I’m sure you have seen the announcement of Pantone’s colors for 2016. What do you think of the color duo?

I think we assume the color of the year will be a color picked exclusively for interior design and paint color. But how often have we used Pantone’s color choice of the year for our walls?

pantone previous colors

Rarely ever. Pantone has a system that helps manufacturers define color precisely. Every year, the company polls décor and fashion designers, as well as manufacturers and retailers, on what colors they plan to use, led by Leatrice Eiseman, to pick the color of the coming year. Pantone tips off some marketing partners so that they can create products, such as Sephora cosmetics and Keurig coffee makers, that use the colors:

What am I loving about the color combination? Because, have you seen the fabric using Pantone’s 2016 color choices together!?

The colors are absolutely gorgeous together! And it is the fabric we will be bringing in to our interiors:

And soon there will be a lot more selection in accessories and furnishings! I like the individual two colors but what I really love is the color combo together. I predict we will be using the colors together in fabric and other accessories more than just one of the colors alone.

What I took away the most from reading all about the new Pantone 2016 color:

“We wanted compassion, which today a lot of people are looking for,” Ms. Eiseman says. Pantone’s news release describes the colors as “inducing feelings of stability, constancy, comfort and relaxation,” and argues that they “create balance in a chaotic world.” source

I don’t know if I would paint my walls pink, but here is a couple of beautiful rooms that might make me change my mind!:

ROSE QUARTZ & SERENITY COLOR PAIRINGS

Whether in soft or hard surface material, the pairing of Rose Quartz and Serenity brings calm and relaxation. Appealing in all finishes, matte, metallic and glossy, the engaging combo joins easily with other mid-tones including greens and purples, rich browns, and all shades of yellow and pink. Add in silver or hot brights for more splash and sparkle.

And it certainly is better than the nail polish color last year, Marsala. What do you think of the combo? Would love to hear.

What Candice Says About Color

October 24, 2015

new neutrals

Candice Olson- Design Superstar! And she is as nice and down to Earth in real life as she is on TV. She made us laugh with her jokes about her height, (over 6 feet tall!) her husband, her kids and even Chico. She told us that her ‘overnight success’ only took 23 years to achieve!

candice

She spoke to a small group of us last Saturday morning in High Point at my favorite store of the whole Market- Surya. I loved it and you would too. It was on my list to visit because of their accessories. Wow! It was an accessory superstore! Beautiful lamps, rugs, bedding, pillows, poufs, ottomans and so much more.

Here are some of the highlights of what Candice had to say:

She told us that today’s new neutrals transcend style. A core palette of cool grays through warm taupes and creams provide a versatile backdrop for any environment.

neutrals

We are moving into a very organic phase in home design. The colors being used are a nature inspired palette. We want to bring the outdoors in! Neutrals can be light, such as grays and taupes, or neutrals can be dark such as brown.

Her design style is using neutrals and layering the room with contrasts such as texture and patterns. Neutrals are non-committal colors so they bring a long life span to a space and easily changed with pops of color with accessories.

Candice brings life to a room using combinations of light and dark, warm and cool and matte and sheen in paint colors, furnishings and accessories. She likes accessories in small doses that ‘tickles’ the room like pinks and oranges.

Question Time With Candice:

* What do you think of Benjamin Moore’s color of the year- Simply White?

CO: I love it! It’s clean and fresh and works wonderfully with the organic and neutral palettes.

* Is gray going to continue being popular?

CO: Gray is still very popular and will continue to be a strong neutral.

* What other colors are being used in the new neutral color palette?

CO: Greige is becoming even more popular especially working with grays.

* I actually raised my hand like an excited kid and asked her if she thought her Five Favorite Neutrals still worked well and if she still used herself?

CO: Absolutely! I still think they are great colors and I use them often as well as in different shades.

It was really exciting meeting her! I do wish I had a better picture with her:

I will let you know what she said about blues and blue-green color palettes in my newsletter next week.

I’m not sure how ‘new’ they are, but what do you think of the ‘new neutrals’?  Gray and beige=Greige? Easy to decorate with neutrals? Too boring for you? Soothing? Comforting?

I have to give a shout-out to my friend Julie for taking better notes than me!

Hope you are having great weekend everyone!

Benjamin Moore 2016 Color Of The Year

October 7, 2015

If you have not already heard on social media, Benjamin Moore has chosen the color Simply White OC-117 as the color for 2016.

Benjamin_Moore_Color_of_the_Year_2016

Simply White is a warm white without all of those pesky undertones to worry about contrasting with. It is a very constant color and does not change in various lighting sources. A beautiful neutral that I am excited about!:

I read an interesting article from Architectural Digest today featuring Ellen O’Neill who is the creative director at Benjamin Moore and the mastermind of choosing the colors of the year, here. She stated when asked, how did white become a color of interest?:

We were in Paris at Maison et Objet in January, and we had just come off of a photoshoot all about whites. Then it was the summer of the white shirtdress. Even last week with the pope—another gift from the universe—you’re looking at millions of people lining the streets and you can find him. It’s strong. It’s directing your eye. It’s a beacon.”

Did you notice all the white on the fashion runway this past summer? A color always seems to appear in the fashion industry first, then it is brought into our homes.

Simply White OC-117 is cleansing and fresh. Why do you think so many people love white kitchens? I think it is because they not only love the clean, fresh, uncluttered look but also because a white room is never trendy or dated.

So what do you think of the the new color of the year, Simply White? I think it is a beautiful and sophisticated color that will not go out of style. I’m in! Why not white? Let me know what you think!

How Popular Are The 2015 Top Chosen Colors?

June 4, 2015

Every year I wonder if the colors that were chosen by the major paint companies for the top spot of the year, actually become more popular with the consumer. Let’s take a look how this years colors are faring:

Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year 2015, Guilford Green HC-116:

(Do you see the difference in the two above photos wall color because of lighting? Always be sure to test at home!) These photos were all taken recently. When I first wrote about the color of the year when it was announced here, it was difficult finding photos of walls painted with Guilford Green. Now you can find quite a few rooms online:

Even exteriors:

Yes, I think Guilford Green is much more popular now!

What about Sherwin Williams Coral Reef SW 6606?:

Coral Reef

Such a beautiful color. Did you know the coral color comes from pink, orange and red?

I could not find any entire rooms painted in Coral Reef, only a few accent walls. But the accessories in coral are hot! This is my favorite photo using Coral Reef:

Gorgeous!

What about Pantone 18-1438 Marsala?

marsala

I do not think this color was intended for the walls. I have seen accessories in the color Marsala:

Do you think Marsala has caught on yet? Do you like the color better than when it was first announced?

So, yes I believe Guilford Green is a color that has been accepted by the consumer as a wall color. Accessories only in Coral Reef and Marsala. The year is not half over yet, maybe things will change. Stay tuned!

Update For Spring Using Coral Accessories

March 19, 2015

Looking to freshen up your rooms this Spring? Still trending BIG this year is the color coral:

Coral is a beautiful color to refresh and lighten up any room. A color combination I am in love with now is coral, navy blue and mineral blue:

I also am loving coral and turquoise together:

Unlike last Spring, coral colored accessories now are easy to find and at great prices. New towels for the bath:
