What I Love About Pantone’s 2016 Color Choice

December 4, 2015

I’m sure you have seen the announcement of Pantone’s colors for 2016. What do you think of the color duo?

I think we assume the color of the year will be a color picked exclusively for interior design and paint color. But how often have we used Pantone’s color choice of the year for our walls?

pantone previous colors

Rarely ever. Pantone has a system that helps manufacturers define color precisely. Every year, the company polls décor and fashion designers, as well as manufacturers and retailers, on what colors they plan to use, led by Leatrice Eiseman, to pick the color of the coming year. Pantone tips off some marketing partners so that they can create products, such as Sephora cosmetics and Keurig coffee makers, that use the colors:

What am I loving about the color combination? Because, have you seen the fabric using Pantone’s 2016 color choices together!?

The colors are absolutely gorgeous together! And it is the fabric we will be bringing in to our interiors:

And soon there will be a lot more selection in accessories and furnishings! I like the individual two colors but what I really love is the color combo together. I predict we will be using the colors together in fabric and other accessories more than just one of the colors alone.

What I took away the most from reading all about the new Pantone 2016 color:

“We wanted compassion, which today a lot of people are looking for,” Ms. Eiseman says. Pantone’s news release describes the colors as “inducing feelings of stability, constancy, comfort and relaxation,” and argues that they “create balance in a chaotic world.” source

I don’t know if I would paint my walls pink, but here is a couple of beautiful rooms that might make me change my mind!:

ROSE QUARTZ & SERENITY COLOR PAIRINGS

Whether in soft or hard surface material, the pairing of Rose Quartz and Serenity brings calm and relaxation. Appealing in all finishes, matte, metallic and glossy, the engaging combo joins easily with other mid-tones including greens and purples, rich browns, and all shades of yellow and pink. Add in silver or hot brights for more splash and sparkle.

And it certainly is better than the nail polish color last year, Marsala. What do you think of the combo? Would love to hear.

Fabric Tip Worth Repeating

July 14, 2015

I probably sound like a broken record on the subject, but what happened today proves my point perfectly why you should be ordering fabric samples before purchasing.

inman sultana

I have been looking quite a while for the perfect fabric for my kitchen windows and after looking at different colors and patterns, I decided a fabric with a white background with navy design would be perfect.

The two fabric samples above are pictures of the same fabric. The background looks plainly white, don’t you agree? This is the sample I received today in mail:

Even through the computer, you can see how OFF white it is. And the navy is plush and thick. Not what I was expecting. Here is another example:

Notice the white background. And here is the actual sample of fabric:

Can you see how OFF white the actual fabric is?

Imagine if I did not worry about getting a sample and ordered 14 yards of it for window treatments? What if it were for a client? You can not return it!

I love, love using fabric and do not want to discourage anyone from ordering fabric online. Just be sure to order that sample to save yourself from any headaches! Thanks everyone!

Designer Tip When Ordering Fabric Online

September 30, 2014

[pinterest]I miss the old days of going into a large fabric store and seeing and touching all of the many gorgeous fabrics, don’t you? I used to love to go and pick out my fabric for projects. I could touch it as well as see it.

Our only local store closed and now I have to do everything online. Easy, yes. A lot of fabrics to choose from, yes. But….

Have you ever received fabric in the mail and thought that this fabric is nothing like you thought when ordered online? Much different than the computer fabric.

You know how I always suggest buying small paint samples to try before you buy a large amount? Well I also strongly suggest the same with fabric. Always, always order a memo to see what the fabric actually looks like. Do not pick paint colors based on the fabric yet or make any other purchases around this fabric until you have it in hand.

This happened to me just this week. This is the fabric I ordered online:

BH Silk Ocean

Beacon Hill

I thought it would be perfect for a window treatment project I am working on. This is the actual sample of the fabric I received in the mail:

DSCN7290[1]

Can you see the difference?! The actual fabric is much, much duller than the picture, and the blue is not even look like a navy blue.

Nothing like I had expected! Imagine if I did not order a sample and just ordered 8 yards based on the computer photo? Big trouble! I was so disappointed. Here is another example of fabric online:

GH Fabrics

And actual:

Can you see the difference? The online version’s background is gray and the actual fabric background is beige. The flower size also was not what I expected. Such a big difference between the two.

*Designer Tip: When ordering fabric online, order a sample memo first! You will be glad you did.

Amazing how different they are!

Why Won’t This Fabric Work?

July 12, 2014

When I saw this Robert Allen fabric, I was excited to finally find a fabric for my kitchen that I loved:

fabric2

Isn’t it beautiful? I love the colors and this fabric would have made perfect chair cushions. BUT, when I laid the fabric sample on the new countertops:

fabric3

I saw that it would not work. Can you tell why the fabric is not working well with the countertop?

This photo shows why better:

fabric4

The background of the fabric is beige, the countertop is white! The ‘dirty’ beige was not even noticeable,(the background looked white) until I compared and put it against the ‘clean’ white. I will need a fabric with a white background, not beige, to work together with the rest of the room.  Another great example why you should always try a sample of the fabric or paint first before purchasing.

That is too bad because I really loved the fabric. Back on the fabric hunt! Have a great summer weekend everyone!

Jazzy Statement Chairs

Don’t you just love one-of-a-kind statement chairs? A chair that is full of personality and uniqueness?:

chair

I have to admit I was pretty excited when One Kings Lane contacted me last week to help introduce their new Decor Resource Center to my blog readers. They knew I loved accent statement chairs and asked if I would share one of my favorite chairs. Here is a chair I just finished painting and had reupholstered:

chair1

I have always loved the shape of this chair. According to the resource guide, my chair is similar to Renaissance Revival Chair, 1870. Their resource guide is great that you can look up the history of your chair from Ancient civilizations to Modern American Design. There are illustrations of each chair that includes a detailed history:

When designing a statement chair, the first step is finding a chair that you love, a piece that gets you excited(no matter what it looks like before):

Then I decide where the chair will be going, so I can work with the existing furnishings. I put together this fabric palette that will work well:

chairr fabric

I think statement chairs add life to a room by being a centerpiece that accents the rest of the decor. When people enter the room, their eyes are drawn to it. Here are a couple of my favorite chairs I have saved:

Sometimes a room needs a chair as a finishing touch once everything is in place. Do you have any statement chairs in your home? Now is the time to search the internet or flea markets for a signature chair that can be reupholstered, repainted or restored to finish off the room!

PS I wanted to add a couple pictures of the whole fireplace that a reader requested. She wanted to see the whole thing. Here you go Terri!

Quick Tip When Reupholstering

November 9, 2013

chair

A good suggestion to remember when you are narrowing down your choices with different fabric samples on the furniture piece you are going to have slipcovered or reupholstered:

chair2

Is to get a truer impression of how the new fabric will look by using a white backdrop between the new and existing fabric:

chair3

It is the same as sampling paint colors on the wall. You should always sample with a white piece between so that way you are not influenced by the existing color on the walls.

It is a easy step that will help you visually see what the new fabric will look like on the furniture piece without being influenced by the existing fabric. Simple and smart!
