What I Love About Pantone’s 2016 Color Choice

December 4, 2015

I’m sure you have seen the announcement of Pantone’s colors for 2016. What do you think of the color duo?

     Serenity                 rose quartz

            Pantone Serenity            Pantone Rose Quartz

I think we assume the color of the year will be a color picked exclusively for interior design and paint color. But how often have we used Pantone’s color choice of the year for our walls?

pantone previous colors

Rarely ever. Pantone has a system that helps manufacturers define color precisely. Every year, the company polls décor and fashion designers, as well as manufacturers and retailers, on what colors they plan to use, led by Leatrice Eiseman, to pick the color of the coming year. Pantone tips off some marketing partners so that they can create products, such as Sephora cosmetics and Keurig coffee makers, that use the colors:

KitchenAid’s iconic Stand Mixer in Guava Glaze, a warm pink tone informed by PANTONE 13-1520 Rose Quartz.

What am I loving about the color combination? Because, have you seen the fabric using Pantone’s 2016 color choices together!?

The colors are absolutely gorgeous together! And it is the fabric we will be bringing in to our interiors:

And soon there will be a lot more selection in accessories and furnishings! I like the individual two colors but what I really love is the color combo together. I predict we will be using the colors together in fabric and other accessories more than just one of the colors alone.

What I took away the most from reading all about the new Pantone 2016 color:

“We wanted compassion, which today a lot of people are looking for,” Ms. Eiseman says. Pantone’s news release describes the colors as “inducing feelings of stability, constancy, comfort and relaxation,” and argues that they “create balance in a chaotic world.” source

I don’t know if I would paint my walls pink, but here is a couple of beautiful rooms that might make me change my mind!:

ROSE QUARTZ & SERENITY COLOR PAIRINGS

Whether in soft or hard surface material, the pairing of Rose Quartz and Serenity brings calm and relaxation. Appealing in all finishes, matte, metallic and glossy, the engaging combo joins easily with other mid-tones including greens and purples, rich browns, and all shades of yellow and pink. Add in silver or hot brights for more splash and sparkle.

And it certainly is better than the nail polish color last year, Marsala. What do you think of the combo? Would love to hear.

What Candice Says About Color

October 24, 2015

new neutrals

Candice Olson- Design Superstar! And she is as nice and down to Earth in real life as she is on TV. She made us laugh with her jokes about her height, (over 6 feet tall!) her husband, her kids and even Chico. She told us that her ‘overnight success’ only took 23 years to achieve!

candice

She spoke to a small group of us last Saturday morning in High Point at my favorite store of the whole Market- Surya. I loved it and you would too. It was on my list to visit because of their accessories. Wow! It was an accessory superstore! Beautiful lamps, rugs, bedding, pillows, poufs, ottomans and so much more.

Here are some of the highlights of what Candice had to say:

She told us that today’s new neutrals transcend style. A core palette of cool grays through warm taupes and creams provide a versatile backdrop for any environment.

neutrals

We are moving into a very organic phase in home design. The colors being used are a nature inspired palette. We want to bring the outdoors in! Neutrals can be light, such as grays and taupes, or neutrals can be dark such as brown.

Her design style is using neutrals and layering the room with contrasts such as texture and patterns. Neutrals are non-committal colors so they bring a long life span to a space and easily changed with pops of color with accessories.

Candice brings life to a room using combinations of light and dark, warm and cool and matte and sheen in paint colors, furnishings and accessories. She likes accessories in small doses that ‘tickles’ the room like pinks and oranges.

Question Time With Candice:

* What do you think of Benjamin Moore’s color of the year- Simply White?

CO: I love it! It’s clean and fresh and works wonderfully with the organic and neutral palettes.

* Is gray going to continue being popular?

CO: Gray is still very popular and will continue to be a strong neutral.

* What other colors are being used in the new neutral color palette?

CO: Greige is becoming even more popular especially working with grays.

* I actually raised my hand like an excited kid and asked her if she thought her Five Favorite Neutrals still worked well and if she still used herself?

CO: Absolutely! I still think they are great colors and I use them often as well as in different shades.

It was really exciting meeting her! I do wish I had a better picture with her:

I will let you know what she said about blues and blue-green color palettes in my newsletter next week.

I’m not sure how ‘new’ they are, but what do you think of the ‘new neutrals’?  Gray and beige=Greige? Easy to decorate with neutrals? Too boring for you? Soothing? Comforting?

I have to give a shout-out to my friend Julie for taking better notes than me!

Hope you are having great weekend everyone!

Back Home From High Point Market 2015

October 18, 2015

I arrived home today from my adventure at High Point Market and Furnitureland South with my IRN friends from all over the States and Canada. What an exciting and educational trip I had!

I am going to give you all the details later this week but I wanted to share a few highlights because my head is just bursting with information.

The best part of my trip was meeting Candice Olson. She is my all time favorite designer:

candace

She is just as charming and funny in real life! We were able to ask her questions about color and design which I will tell you all about this week. She said that people are still asking her about Chico. haha

The first two days of the conference were held at Furnitureland South which is the largest furniture store in the world. The place is enormous! We had several great, educational seminars from companies such as Houzz, Resale Ready® Home Staging, an Art Gallery, a new design show that is launching soon, Take Five and we also learned about biophilia. No it is not a disease! It actually is what the design world is moving toward for the future.

High Point Market was amazing! I explained here how large the market is and I saw for myself just how big it actually is! I will let you know all the new trends and answer all those questions you and I wondered about.

Although I had a wonderful time, I am glad to be home and happy I will be able to share all the latest new trends and ideas with you. See you tomorrow everyone!

Off To High Point Market

October 13, 2015

I am getting so excited for my trip tomorrow! I am headed to North Carolina to attend the Fall 2015 High Point Market Week. I am meeting up with a group of designer friends from the Interior Redecorators Network.

Our group is invited for an exclusive private tour of High Point Market on Thursday, which is where home fashion trendsetters go to see the top home trends highlighted. It is the largest furniture store in the world! We are arriving on Wednesday and it is open to the design community on Friday. To give you an idea how large and popular High Point is:

The World’s Home for Home Furnishings

The High Point Market is the largest furnishings industry trade show in the world, bringing more than 75,000 people to High Point every six months. Serious retail home furnishings buyers can be found in High Point twice a year because if you can’t find it in High Point…it probably doesn’t exist.

Current Demographics
  • 180 Buildings
  • 11.5 Million Square Feet of Showplace
  • 75,000 Attendees Each Market
  • More Than 2000 Exhibitors
  • 100+ Countries Represented
  • Tens of Thousands of New Product Introductions
  • Approximately 10% of Attendees Are International

This will be my third visit to High Point. I am registered as a buyer this year and I have researched where I would like to visit most. This time I am going with a well-planned itinerary!

My passion this year is accessories! Rugs, pillows, bedding and fabric. I love looking at new mirror’s, accent tables, lamps and artwork! So much fun.

I even have a list of questions I am going to research:

What is the new ‘Color Story’? Which colors are trending now?

Are geometric textures and organic forms still popular going forward?

What shape and design is new for coffee tables? ( I need a new table!)

Are animal heads still popular in accessories?

What’s new in lighting?

Are starburst mirrors still trending?

I would love if you could comment a question you would like to know and I will find out for you!

What I will be learning next week is amazing! Not to mention seeing old friends and making new connections and friends. I can’t wait to share everything with you when I return! I will be sharing photos on Instagram if you can’t wait to see!

Fabric Tip Worth Repeating

July 14, 2015

I probably sound like a broken record on the subject, but what happened today proves my point perfectly why you should be ordering fabric samples before purchasing.

inman sultana

I have been looking quite a while for the perfect fabric for my kitchen windows and after looking at different colors and patterns, I decided a fabric with a white background with navy design would be perfect.

inman close

The two fabric samples above are pictures of the same fabric. The background looks plainly white, don’t you agree? This is the sample I received today in mail:

inman sample

Even through the computer, you can see how OFF white it is. And the navy is plush and thick. Not what I was expecting. Here is another example:

lovely

Notice the white background. And here is the actual sample of fabric:

lovely sample

Can you see how OFF white the actual fabric is?

Imagine if I did not worry about getting a sample and ordered 14 yards of it for window treatments? What if it were for a client? You can not return it!

One more example to drive this info into your brain:

I love, love using fabric and do not want to discourage anyone from ordering fabric online. Just be sure to order that sample to save yourself from any headaches! Thanks everyone!
