Designer Tip When Ordering Fabric Online

September 30, 2014

[pinterest]I miss the old days of going into a large fabric store and seeing and touching all of the many gorgeous fabrics, don’t you? I used to love to go and pick out my fabric for projects. I could touch it as well as see it.

Our only local store closed and now I have to do everything online. Easy, yes. A lot of fabrics to choose from, yes. But….

Have you ever received fabric in the mail and thought that this fabric is nothing like you thought when ordered online? Much different than the computer fabric.

You know how I always suggest buying small paint samples to try before you buy a large amount? Well I also strongly suggest the same with fabric. Always, always order a memo to see what the fabric actually looks like. Do not pick paint colors based on the fabric yet or make any other purchases around this fabric until you have it in hand.

This happened to me just this week. This is the fabric I ordered online:

BH Silk Ocean

Beacon Hill

I thought it would be perfect for a window treatment project I am working on. This is the actual sample of the fabric I received in the mail:

DSCN7290[1]

Can you see the difference?! The actual fabric is much, much duller than the picture, and the blue is not even look like a navy blue.

Nothing like I had expected! Imagine if I did not order a sample and just ordered 8 yards based on the computer photo? Big trouble! I was so disappointed. Here is another example of fabric online:

GH Fabrics

And actual:

DSCN7294[1]

Can you see the difference? The online version’s background is gray and the actual fabric background is beige. The flower size also was not what I expected. Such a big difference between the two.

*Designer Tip: When ordering fabric online, order a sample memo first! You will be glad you did.

Best Front Door Colors For A Beige Home

September 27, 2014

[pinterest]Looking for a front door paint color? One of my next home projects is painting our front door before it gets cold again. I want to find a color that will show off some personality!

See the door next to the garage? This is the door we use most often and consider as our front door. You will notice the home is taupe/beige color and I have to find a color that works well with it. I started putting a photo list together to show Mr. Kelly a few different options and thought I would share a few of my favorites:

All of these front door colors will work well with a beige/tan exterior home. A red or black door is stunning:

Barn Sale and Kitchen Update

September 22, 2014

[pinterest]One of my very favorite restaurants closed recently. It was our special place that my husband and I loved going to. They served the best shrimp scampi I have ever had anywhere.  The name of the restaurant was The Thompson House Eatery in the little town of Jackson, NH:

The husband and wife team recently decided to close the restaurant. I am happy for them because they are going to enjoy life more now. And, they are having barn sales every Saturday! We went this past weekend and look at some of the good stuff we found:

barn sale

What good deals we found and the prices were unbelievably low. The large blue jug above was only $5.00. I love it! The wooden box my husband found is handmade and sold for $3.00. The bag of vintage matches sold for only $1.00.

Here is our favorite treasure we found that day:

hutch

Isn’t it beautiful? It has glass shelves and the sides are also in glass. I wish the hutch was with it, but we have a few good ideas for this piece. And the price- $30.00. Wow!

And look at this great bookshelf we found:

It is in great shape and well made. I have been looking for the perfect idea for this kitchen wall and this is a great starter piece! Did you notice the paint sample chips already? I can’t wait to paint it. Such a great find. Oh… and it was only $15.00. I know!

Our new blinds have been installed in our kitchen that I spoke about here:

They look great and keep that strong sun out. I think it is looking good so far. And I have decided which fabric window treatments I am going with and I am looking at fabrics now. I love fabric, do you? And my one finished little corner:

Makes me smile every time I walk in. Have a great day everyone!

[pinterest]Looking for the perfect new paint color? Based on my color consulting lately, it seems the color blue is the number one color choice for home color palettes:

You know how I love blue! It is the perfect color in bringing other colors together as well as being a great neutral on it’s own:

I often use blue to bring together the old with the new:

My Autumn Decorated Porch

September 12, 2014

Looking at all of the beautiful inspirational Fall photos here, here and here, I felt motivated to decorate my own porch:

I used the same wreath from last year I made here. In one photo, I saw a pretty white pumpkin with a black monogram. She had used a decal sticker for her pumpkin, which I could not find in large alphabet letters anywhere! But I like my ‘B’ I found:

autumnb

Can you tell up close which is the real pumpkins and which are faux? Shhhhhh..Picking out the cornstalk was the best. Look, it still has corn on it!:

I might add an up light behind the cornstalk. That would look really nice at night!

Have you started decorating for Autumn? I know it is a bit early, but I was supposed to leave for Chicago tomorrow to visit my sisters and I was just planning ahead. I was looking so forward to it. Unfortunately, my trip was cancelled today but that is another story.
