Silver or Gold, Which Do You Prefer?

May 31, 2014

Which finish are you more attracted to:

The glamorous and chic silver:

Or the luxuriousness and warmth of classic gold?

I seem to always favor silver and buy more accessories in silver than gold:

And look how pretty the combination of silver and gold is when done correctly:

I think both rooms look beautiful! Do you prefer decorating with silver or gold? How do you feel about mixing the two?

Why Does My Gray Look So Blue?

May 28, 2014

A reader wrote me the other day and said that she was so upset because her new gray paint looked like ‘blue’ on the walls. I asked which gray she used and she answered’, “Benjamin Moore Sterling 1591.”

I told her that I think Sterling is a very pretty gray, but it reads more ‘blue’ than gray once on the walls:

As I explained in previous posts, if the gray has a blue undertone, no matter how small, the ‘gray’ on your wall will look more blue than gray. A couple of other blue-gray colors are Coventry Gray HC-169 and Stonington Gray HC-170.

If you were looking for a ‘grayer gray’ for your walls, take a look at Revere Pewter HC-172 or Thunder AF-685. They are more of a neutral, beige gray. No blue at all.

Be sure to always test your colors on a large poster board before you paint the walls. Good Luck!

I know this is a review for many of you, but it is good to keep in practice!

I Disagree, David Bromstad

May 20, 2014

In the new June issue of HGTV home magazine, I read an article where David Bromstad, host of HGTV Color Splash, answered paint questions from homeowners. One of the questions was:

“What wall colors look good with dark woodwork? I don’t want to paint the trim that’s original to my house.”

David answered:

“Dark woodwork can be incredible, but only if the wall color majorly contrasts with it; otherwise it will look like a haunted house. That’s why I would go with white. The lighter the walls, the more high-end the trim appears.”

This is where I disagree with the very talented David Bromstad. He is saying that you should use a white paint color for contrast to really make the woodwork stand out. But why would you want woodwork to stand out? ‘Hey, look at me’.

When I design a room, I select a wall color to bring the furnishings, window treatments, rugs and accessories together for a cohesive look. But if you have that much contrast between the wood color and the wall color, that is all you are going to notice in the room. If that is the look you want, then I would advise you to go for it. But just be aware, there will be a high contrast, wood-bossy look in the room.

If you want your room to look together and cohesive, I suggest using a color that works with the wood. That’s why I love the greens with stained trim, here and here:

I think it looks natural and beautiful together. So I am really sorry David Bromstad, I do not agree with your white paint and dark woodwork combination. It is too high contrast for me. Readers, who do you agree with?

Eric Roth Is In The House!

May 10, 2014

It was my extreme honor and pleasure to meet and work with one of the top photographers in the country, Eric Roth. I have always been a big fan of his beautiful work:

Although Eric’s home base is near Boston, he travels often taking photographs for such design magazines as House Beautiful, New England Home, Traditional Home and Elle Décor.

It was a beautiful, sunny day in the mountains when Eric came to my home in New Hampshire last week. He came to take photographs of my design work for my portfolio. I want professional photos for a couple projects I am working on as well as having a physical book of my work that I can show potential clients.

He took interior photos and well as exterior shots, upstairs, downstairs and all my little vignettes he loved! Eric was kind enough to let me follow him all around asking him a million questions:

I was a little nervous taking photos of the great photographer! Watch for Eric’s latest project in the new June issue of House Beautiful with photos for ‘The Bath Of The Month’!

Dreams do come true! Eric Roth was in the house! I can’t wait to show you the photographs in a couple weeks!

Weekend Ombre Project

May 5, 2014

A project I have always wanted to try is to paint one of my sets of stairs with something different and unique:

stairs

I had no trouble convincing my husband of my idea, even though is not always crazy about all of my painting ventures. 🙂

I showed him a picture on Pinterest and he agreed it was a great idea:

I needed to select another color that would work well with my top green wall and also Ben Moore’s AF-575 Instinct, which will soon be painted on a nearby wall:

I choose Ben Moore’s color strip # 090. The only problem was that there are eight stairs to paint and the paint strip only has seven colors:

I did not want the color to go any lighter or darker than the strip, so I choose In The Twilight # 1434 which color falls right between Irises and Amethyst Shadow:

I bought the smallest size available which is a pint. The paint store told me the small pints only come in a flat or eggshell finish. I thought I was going to do the stairs in semi gloss, but I am so glad now because I love the non-shine look of the ombre!:
