Big Girl’s Bedroom

I recently completed an online design plan for a mom who’s daughter will be celebrating her thirteenth birthday in June. Mom wants to surprise her with a new bedroom look while she is off visiting her Dad for the weekend. We started with the duvet cover she found at Pottery Barn:

Isn’t it so pretty? Mom contacted me because she wondered if she should paint the walls in a white or beige because there is so much color in the bedding:

pb8

source

Definitely not beige, because we are working with a white background in the duvet (clean vs. dirty). Plus, I think painting a white on the walls would make the bed stand out too much in the room. We want a wall color that will enhance the colors of the bedding:

There are a lot of colors to choose from in the duvet! But since the room is going to be for a young girl, here are a couple suggestions I thought of right away:

Ben Moore Faded Violet CSP-455:

Ben Moore Pinot Grigio Grape CSP-460:

pinotgrape

Ben Moore Santa Clara 753:

santa clara

Ben Moore In The Tropics CSP-640:

Ben Moore Spa Day CSP-635:

I always give suggestions of colors that might look close in color because the next step is important where the home owner has to pick up samples and see which shade is working best with the actual fabric. Mom did not want to even look at lime greens which would also work. So we narrowed it down to these few choices and now it is her turn to see which color works best. I also gave her a safe color:

Ben Moore Nimbus Gray 2131-50:

nimbus_grey

A beautiful color but remember this is a teen’s room! I think we need some personality on the walls!

I am excited to see which color she chooses. I would love to help pick out other accessories for the room (mirror, little chandelier, artwork). Hint, hint!!

Which color do you think will look great on the walls with her bedding? I know she will be happy with any of the choices!

Interior Stylist Stacy Kunstel

I find it so interesting that many of these beautiful photos we see in magazines are not only designed brilliantly by an interior designer, but then are also ‘styled’ for the perfect shot for the photographer:

Interior stylists are involved in creating imagery for interior books, magazines and catalogues. They finesse spaces for portfolios and magazine spreads.:

One of my favorite eye-candy publications is New England Home. I love looking through their beautiful, glossy photos:

One of the main reasons I love this particular magazine is because I admire the work of Stacy Kunstel, stylist extraordinaire. All of the photos in this piece are styled by Stacy. Are they not amazingly gorgeous?:

Just beautiful. Her work is such an inspiration! Maybe she needs an assistant:

I love looking at beautiful pictures and hope you do too!

Is the Gray and Yellow Trend Ending?

May 22, 2013

I think that the color combination of yellow and gray together is beautiful. But is the trend losing its appeal?

gray1

source

The colors still look great together but I think we get tired of a trend, like any other trend, after a while. When the market is totally saturated with a look a trend loses its appeal. The yellow and gray combination began to really take notice in 2009:

And was very strong in 2011 and 2012:

But I really see it coming to end. The passion for the combination is not there anymore although the stores have not quite caught on not quite caught on! I have seen new items coming in everyday in the bright yellow paired with gray:

Remember how we all loved the blue and brown color combination before it went out of favor a couple years ago?:

Do you agree that the gray and yellow combination has lost it’s design appeal? That the trend has come to an end?

Enchanted Garden Plant Sale

Every year, the weekend after Mother’s Day in May, my sister-in-law and her friend has a huge plant sale in Attleboro, MA. I love going not only for the great deals on plants, but also because I love going to the home where the sale is located:

That is her front door, now look at how beautiful her side door is also:

A purple painted door! She loves it and said that it makes her smile every time she walks through:

plants5

I know I would too! And here is a small portion of her gorgeous, magical garden in the backyard:

The amount and assortment of perennial plants for sale is just amazing:

The plant sale is so well organized. Did you notice the sign in the above picture ‘Part Shade’? Each of the tables are set up with plants according to their requirement of sun, shade or part shade:

plant10

I love the way every plant has a picture of what the plant will look like when in bloom:

plant12

Did you notice the prices marked on the sticks? The average price for the perennials and trees is between $4.00 and $5.00. The annual and vegetable plants are only $1-2 dollar each!:

Great deals!!

Here are a few of the shopping carts:

But I always try to get a wagon!:

A very special “Thank You!” to Elaine & Sally for letting me come early to take pictures and share:

On the right is my sister-in-law Elaine, and the owner of this home and yard, Creative Sally, is on the left. Look at her vegetable garden!:

All so pretty! And I saved the best idea to share for last:

plant18

I thought this idea was genius! See the small flower pots holding the sticks?:

stick

It does not matter if there are holes in the bottom or not:

stick1

The pots were filled with ordinary sand:

stick2

And then used to hold all of the signs and pictures:

stick3

The secret? Why is the sand holding the sticks up and not flowing out of the bottom?

stick4

Because the sand is wet! What an easy, why-didn’t-I-think-of-that idea! Imagine all the ways you can use outdoors. As place setting cards at the table:

stick5

source

For outdoor weddings, kid’s parties or just a barbecue they would be so easy and creative. And the larger the pot, the larger the sign you can use:

stick6

I think this is such a fun and creative idea! I bet you can think of many other additional ways to use.

I hope you enjoyed my visit to the plant sale and all of the beautiful scenery!

A Rug Sets the Color Stage

A reader recently wrote and asked if I would help choose a paint color for her new living room redesign. This is the rug she recently purchased to work with her tan sofa:

rug

source

She wondered if she should use a tan/beige color on the walls or not. I told her to visualize what it would be like to see your tan sofa up against a tan wall. I think that it might end up making the room look a little boring and not offer any contrast:

Classic style kitchen and dining room interior in beige pastoral colors

Also, think of how dark the rug will stand out in your room. Optimally, all your furnishing should work ‘together’ to make the room cohesive including your walls, floors and large furnishings.

Imagine how bottom heavy this room above would be with a dark rug on the floor. So what colors should we look at for the walls?

rug

I would not suggest black for the walls, so that leaves us with blues and purples and/or grays. Here were a couple of my suggestions to get samples of to see how well it works with the rug:

Benjamin Moore Luxe AF-580:

And one more color suggestion is Storm AF-700 which is a beautiful gray which depending on the light, can also look like a pretty blue or a soft lilac-blue color:

I have used all three colors and they are beautiful wall colors. We will have to wait and see which color works best with her new rug and tan sofa. Then she has to paint a large sample board to see how it looks with her different lighting. We do not want the walls to look too purple. Do you have any other color suggestions? Love to hear them! I will be sure to post which color was the winner.
